Looks like it may have a electrical wire going to it. If it does, it is an electric fuel pump with a regulator adjustment screw on the top.

Dave nailed it.... it is a 12 volt (thus the wires) fuel shutoff valve. You will notice it is open when the ignition is lit.... and off when it is not. You can look at the position of the flat head to determine what open and closed looks like. If I remember correctly the flat head is a manual shut off. Makes it easy not to dump all of the fuel into the bilge when changing your inline fuel filter :smt001

The inline fuel pump (boost pump), if equipped, looks like this. On the right with label SAE J1171 Marine on it. The filter with "Mercury" on it is your inline filter

Thank you. Found it on page 5.1 of the 260 Owner's Manual.

It instructs to keep the manual override knob in the off position.
