My HPU resevoir was pretty empty so I refilled it. I suspect one or both of the actuators is leaking, but I was trying to determine if i am getting the full throw. My system is 17 years old, and I don't have a good way to evaluate it other than that it moves at all.

The travel for a standard Bennett Trim Tab actuator is 2-1/2" but we have made some shorter throw ones for SeaRay. If you see a leak on the actuators send me your name and address and we can send you replacement O-rings along with instructions how to change them, no charge.

Thanks, Tom! You were working early. Well, I am easily getting a 2.5" throw. Also, if not out the actuator, and there was no indication that it was leaking inside, where else does it go?

Oh, and by the way and not directed at Bennett, if I ever find out who designed the layout of my engine compartment, I am going to eat them senseless with a bottle of ATF! The HPU is behind the water heater AND the blower hoses, so even after getting the hoses moved out of the way, it was still a PITA to get to. When my mechanic found out what I was doing, he just laughed at me as he knew EXACTLY where it was placed. Also, more HPU was mounted so high, I had to take it off the transom to do anything with it.

Bryan,

After 17 years some of the fluid has "wiped off" on the cylinder body, O-ring interface which is normal and some has evaporated, which is also normal. The best way to check for leaks is to put both Trim Tabs fully down and leave them there overnight. If they both stay fully down there are no leaks. If one or both retract on their own, then there is a leak and you will need to inspect all of the connections. Given where they mounted your HPU that does not sound too easy!

Thanks, I will try that this weekend.

I am happy to report that there is no leak! It looks like I am good to go!
