What Is the Book Value of Your Boat?

NADA does, but it is not accurate. Best to find numbers that sold or look at listing prices. If you know a broker talk to him.

Both Sea Ray's I've purchased have been a stones throw from the NADA guide value. Both Sea Ray's I've purchased were also generally in the bottom third of asking prices on boattrader.com when I compared across a couple thousand miles radius of listings. Fortunately, both surveyed "above average" in spite of their asking price :)

Hard to get a book value on boats, unlike cars where you can find dozens of the exact same model year options close to home, boats not so much. As some here found, may have to ship from states away to get one.

Other than comparing asking prices on various web sites, is there a national authority that places a value on boats such as is available for cars and trucks?
I find that NADA guides is really not representative for Canada at all. Brokers are the best source, but they are biased if they think they can get your listing. But an honest one will tell you a good number.

The insurance surveyors have a source for local values but it is somewhat out of date, especially the past year when market prices are getting silly high. I got my insurance agreed value survey done last fall and the surveyor said he knew the value was higher and I could sell it for more than what he was allowed to use for insurance value because he has to use hard data that has a lag of a year or more. Normally the values move predictably and slowly. But not last year. He said he cannot speculate on transaction data that he "knows" from talking to people is actually occurring.

While boat book values are useless for private sale pricing, they are a guidepost for financing and insurance so the inaccuracy is in our favor for once.

Pirate, I've joined a (GASP!) rv website much like this one and have been reading post about those gatherings.

Our first summer with the rv likely will involve trips of a few days to a couple of weeks. After that we'll probably make Alaska our first long distance trip. I used to live up there and would enjoy seeing it again.

My wife's mother is 105 and in a long term care facility. We don't want to stray too far in case we need to make a quick return home because something happened to her.

Pirate, we have a 13' Boston Whaler with a 40hp 2-stroke Evinrude on it. We had it in AZ but decided to bring it up to WA. I'm in the process of refinishing some of the wood on it to get it ready for summer fun.

If you ever travel down that coastal highway in California and go thru Santa Maria, stop by the Jiffy Lube, only 1 in town, ask for Colin. He the manager, tell him his dad says hi, he’ll take care you.
