Sorry Mike, you snooze, you lose.

I just called him and agreed to pay the $800. I'm having my Nigerian Prince send him a check for $1,800. He'll cash it and send me back the extra $1,000 and the deed to the slip.

Some/many people have been trying to sell their docks there for years. Nobody wants them or wants to pay for them apparently. I guess one way to try and get rid of it is to give it away. I guess to give it away and count your losses is better than paying for the association fees every year if you're not going to use it anymore.

I have heard rumors that some slip owners in my old marina would “give” their slip away before assessments are announced.

With high lake levels things are very bad in many marinas.

We have owned our boat 4 years and moved marinas 3 times. That's what is great about a boat and renting a slip you can move as your boating changes. Just too many possible negatives owning your slip.
Last weekend we were checking out other marinas in the area

wow! I've been at 3 marinas in 22 years, and most of that time included overlaps. In the past few years I realized that I don't like change...

I've been considering a move, but most likely a return to a previous marina.

I'm quite the opposite. I've been in the same slip for 12 years. It's a nice marina, they seem to care about their tenants, etc. In fact, one of the marina staff called me today and asked me if I would be willing to meet with the Exec Director next week. He wants to meet with a few boat owners to see what they think of the marina and how things are going.

...the DYC...
When is the last time you were there? We thought about getting a membership and slip there. Took the tour. What a dump! YMMV

I've been at the same marina for 6 years, was at one for a couple of weeks before that. I've been on a waiting list for another marina for 5 years... finally got the call on Monday that I'm in!

We were members from '98 to '04. We return regularly to visit friends etc. I haven't seen it this year in the high water. I'm sure the fixed docks, especially the older ones are a challenge.

It has "character" for sure, but it's an awesome place! What stood out as dumpy to you? The outdoor pool is huge and well maintained. The bar at the pool is new within the last few years. The hot tub is available 24 hours. The indoor pool is a like stepping back in time, but it's such a cool and rare luxury. The men's locker room, is well, lol, full of character. The ballroom, particularly the large one is amazing IMO. You'd be amazed at how many members join the club just for the opportunity to host a wedding there. There are tennis courts on-site and a really nice beach just around the corner. The water in the river is clean and clear. There's a fleet of Flying Scots available to members and their kids. When I was there I could keep the dinghy in the water all season and the bottom would still be clean in October.

15 years ago, the island and the city were both negatives. The club operated a shuttle from the club to the mainland to spare members from chaos on the island. Once at the club, members had little reason to leave. Now that the island is a Metropark, Uber & Lyft have replaced the shuttle. There's no need to avoid the island and many, many things to enjoy in the city.

We left because of a toxic and bizarre culture. Silly dress codes, pompous and snobby "elders" and "officers" created a hostile and unwelcome atmosphere as they filled the bar the cigarette smoke and thought of new rules to annoy members before retreating to their 58 Hatterases which never, ever left their docks.

They're all dead now. :D

Now the membership is younger, friendlier, more energetic and more fun. It's a great place to be.

Where did you choose instead?

I have thought about DYC, but I am not sure if I am ready to get back into all the things Club Memberships have. I enjoyed my time in the club we were in while it existed, but I was the Commodore when it was dis-banned and that put a bit of a bad taste in my mouth, as you can never make everyone happy or they flat out forget what was agreed to.

I'm sure! Yacht clubs can be great, but they can also easily become HOA's with boats - with all the drama and fights over power that accompany them.
