Hurricane Damage?
Insurance claims?
Major Warranty work?

If I ask for the work orders, do they have to show them to me?

It may vary by state, but in Wisconsin:
Nope
Nope
Nope

and

Nope

No different then a free online ad.

Try the Boat US registry or other similar services.
It will not find everything but should find insurance type of past claims.

Nothing needs to be disclosed. I think it would be in the best interest of all parties involved, especially for the brokers reputation, to disclose such things. Luckily even if you come across a broker that is less than forthcoming with info you have the experience of a marine surveyor on your side. A marine survey should turn up just about anything.

A boat owner is not required to provide records to you either. A lot of boat owners don't even have them.

There are some excellent brokers in the industry, but some are also borderline crooks. Considering that the broker works for the seller and that he does not get paid until you start writing checks, do you really want to rely on anything he tells you without confirmation whether or not there are disclosure requirements?

Due diligenge in purchasing a boat is totally the responsibility of the buyer. You cannot rely on others for it.

Jim is right in that your hull and mechanical surveyors are your best source of information and discovery about a boat's damage history and condition.

I have always ... always ... worked with my own broker as a "buyer's broker" to cover my interests before any offers are made and earnest money needs to be paid. He is our marina owner and also comes along on sea trials and other vessel activities. Most deals allow to have a co-broker brought in. The selling and buyer's broker thenhave to split the brokerage proceeds. Some brokers that operate on a discount basis such as Redline and they do not allow for co-brokers to be brought in. In that case only a good survey an protect you.
