Hi, I have a 1981 SRV255 with a 454, a MercTrans II transmission, and a TR outdrive. I had some leakage into the bilge, and had a tech look at it. He found it to be leaking from the bottom of the gimbal housing down the transom into the bilge, only when it was underway and stressing that joint. It doesn't leak otherwise.
He has given me two options, one being tighten the bolts and put some type of sealant on the outside (until winter), and two, pull the engine (cause you have to, he says) and split the gimbal housing and look at the leak, and check the transom for rot, and fix it.
Have any of you had this problem? I'm wondering how much it should cost to have him do the better of the two options, and any other info I can get.
