What do you guys tow your boat with

I have been pulling with the explorer for few months now. It came with a towing package but I am not sure if it has a radiator on the tranny. I am thinking about getting one put on the explorer. I always turn the overdrive off when I tow.

Thanks for the info on the explorer. Like I said I want to upgrade, but in a couple of years that bad boy is mine without a car note. I am kind of looking forward to life without a note

2002 ford explorer 4wd with a v6. It pulls it fine but I want to upgrade. My wife has a lexus gx470 with a V8. I use the lex to tow sometimes but something is just wrong with towing a boat with a lexus (according to the wife)

Exactly the setup I started with but with the 8cyl... wife said there was NO way we were using her GX especially after the tranny went out of the explorer... well it's now the lakehouse 'run to the store' vehicle! Didn't look at what you are pulling but I'd like to hear if you have any trouble with your transmission. (there are several sites that have owners rantng about the '02 explorer transmission)(and not ones pulling anything necessarily). Hopefully you won't!

Glad this topic was brought up. My gf and I are headed to Austin this weekend to pick up a 1995 200sig (that is if the stars align :sigh:) She has a 2002 Explorer Limited 4x2 V6 (4.0L) and still unsure what gears it has.....we were told likely 3.73 but I want to be sure since different gears can mean a 1500lbs difference in towing limits.

Larry&Lisa, my gf just got done about 3 months ago putting in a new tranny since hers went out after 60k miles. The tech said that with that year it could have simply been her not being 100% stopped before shifting which caused the damage. Kinda sad seeing as how I have 165k on my tahoe and no hint of problems from the engine or tranny (knocking on wood as I type this).

Glad to hear that some of you have pulled with Explorers. I don't plan on making it a weekly ritual of her pulling it but this summer while I have to live 2 hours away it will sure make it easier if we can both pull it.

yup...same mileage on mine... and while that might be true what the mechanic told you, I know we had never done that... I really think Ford messed up on this one :smt018 It's an interesting read to google the comments from others on this issue.

I pull it with a 2000 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 and my gf will sometimes pull it with her 2002 Explorer. The Explorer pulled it for a couple hours at highway speeds on Saturday and although it can handle it, I much prefer the torque of my Tahoe on the slower hills, and the stability of a larger vehicle. Not to mention my Tahoe doesn't have a Ford tranny

So chalk me up as a Chevy guy......both on land and in the water

Not Yet

I dorve a friends and must agree......Nots o nuts

We still have the 3/4 tons burbs, but added a Duramax crew cab dually to the mix. We figured if we have the tow vehicle first, it makes the upgrade to a larger boat even easier!

We trailer our boat EVERY weekend. We're headed to either Hungry Horse reservoir or Flathead Lake in Montana tomorrow! We just got back from Priest Lake, Idaho last night and I'm chomping at the bit to go RIGHT NOW!!

But the winter is what keeps the Northwest from filling up with people! I LOVE driving in the snow, especially when it's fresh and deep! That keeps people from getting to the ski resorts and is the same magic stuff that we boat on year around. I figure I'm recycling it that way!!
