What do you guys tow your boat with

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I tow with a Toyota Tundra. I had a Chevy Tahoe, but I got tired of the maintenance. Toyota's seem to just work day after day, month after month, year after year. Kinda why I bought a Sea Ray. I really just want to enjoy it. Whenever I find the time to get my family on the boat, I want to get there and have fun.

Your Sea Ray has a Chevy in it.

Actually, I really liked the Vortec 5.3L. It had plently of power and ran great. It was everything else that drove me nuts; transmission, power steering, 4WD and numerous electrical gremlins. The most prevelent of which was the 'check engine soon' light that seemed to have a life of it's own. My hope is that the engine runs like a Chevy and everything else works like a Sea Ray

Mine's a 2004 Ford Excursion.

Mine blows black smoke while it eats Hemi's.

The balance is pretty equal by 75%...25% Chevy, 25% Dodge 25% Fords...25% Misc Foreign jobs. :smt024

No one is going to pick on you for driving the proper truck for your boat. (Much  ) We will give you serious grief for towing with a Toy truck when you need a real one for the boat behind it.

Well, I may be getting a different truck or suv. I had my oil changed yesterday, and they said my gaskets were leaking oil from the rear main seal, and my head gasket. I have never noticed any oil on the ground though. I cant rule it out because I take horrible care of my truck. It has 131K on it, and the oil has been changed maybe 8 to 10 times. I drive alot for work, and by the time I realize I need to change the oil, I am way over. I had 28K on my last oil change. You can bet my boat will be taken better care of though. I am going to check out the truck tomorrow, and see if or where it is leaking. The timing is bad though because we were planning on buying a car for me to use for work in a couple of weeks, so now if the truck is bad, I have to find a truck or suv that gets good gas milage preferably 4 door for 10K or under. We dont need any more payments right now, so we are using our taxes for the new ride. I hope the guys at walmart oil and lube are just stupid, and there is nothing wrong with the truck. If it is messed up though, I found a nissan xterra for 10K I have my eye on.

Ummm........

If your rear main seal is wet, but isn't leaving any oil on the driveway overnight, chances are it's got a ways to go before it NEEDS to be replaced.

Secondly, if your head gasket is going out, you should be seeing some coolant loss or higher-than-normal operating temps. They don't leak oil, they leak coolant, and on top of they usually leak INTERNALLY. Are you sure he didn't say "valve cover gaskets"? If that's the case, it's really nothing to worry about. It's a cheap and easy DIY job.

If you're truly concerned about these issues, get a second opinion from another mechanic. It sounds to me like someone is trying to cash in on your lack of knowledge. Don't be so quick to write off your truck over what sounds like a couple of small repairs. And, for gawds sake, start changing your oil more often........ :smt043

Put us in the category of one of those foreign jobs.

We tow with a VW Touareg. Between the air suspension that keeps everything level and the 310hp V8, it tows our little boat quite nicely. We have a ways to go before we approach the 7700 lb towing limit though with our little boat.

I tow with my 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis. It pulls my little 180 sport just fine.

I have to add a Chevy to the mix. 1997 Chevrolet K1500 Silverado extended cab with 305cid (err, 5.0liter). 118k and running strong; never seen a service shop. Though I have replaced the water pump twice, the rear brake lines, fuel pump, power steering hose and alternator. Great truck.

I used to tow a 155hp Yamaha Waverunner with a 140hp Mazda Miata. The trailer was probably longer than the car but the car never failed to pull it up the ramp.
