Going to be upgrading the TV's and wonder what brand they are using as I always like to keep with stuff that would be original if the quality is there.
ALSO is the old flying saucer compatible with the new digital signals?

When SR, or any manufacturer specifies, acquires, builds in, ships, and evenutally sells a unit, there can be a considerable lag in time. This is why many of the 2007 and 2008 vessels shipped with flat panels that did not have ATSC digital tuners in them.

I would follow the current market, and look at placing the latest cheapest set. Your boat likely has the 13" combo TV/VCRs by Panasonic, which leaves you with an odd hole to fill. I, and others here have done the changeover, with many different approaches.

There is a Dynex 26" 720p w/ built in HD tuner at Best Buy this week for 279.00
I personally placed an Acer 22" digital monitor, and a Samsung SIR-T351 HD tuner in my space to achieve the attached pics. No holes drilled, and it works great. I may still go get the Dynex, or wait for another brand to hit that price point. Memorial Weekend is a great flat panel price dip, historically.

And yes, your omnidirectional antenna will pick up digital broadcast, as long as you are in range. The picture quality will range from similar to Satellite, to 1080i widescreen HD.

Here's how my space evolved over the last couple of years:

Original Equipment:

Replaced TV with a 17" HP Monitor, and Dell laptop with a HD tuner:

Too hard to run, so I replaced the Dell with a Samsung SIR-T351 HD tuner set top box:

Then, I grabbed an Acer 22" digital panel for 169.00 at Best Buy

Someday, I may move the whole thing to the helm bulkhead like the new boats, and turn the hole into a storage cabinet:

Do a search on TV, and you'll find lots of ideas.

Yes our boat does have the crappy panasonics, one in the galley and one in the fwd stateroom. The only one that is built in is the one in the galley. The fwd stateroom has it sitting on a ledge with no surrounding cabinetry. I know what you mean about SR using the cheapest vender available at the time of manufacture too. Still though I would like to use something considered original in todays boats. I'm not a big TV or movie watcher so as long as it plays decent.
And your last pic don't count! It looks photoshopped! :D

depends on boat model SR uses: Samsung, LG, Panasonic and on some bigger yachts Toshibas
your old antenna should work with new converter box but signal amplifier may need to be removed (amp. was designed for analog signal not digital). yo may want to invest a little time and replace old ends on antenna cables.

Installed a 22 LG on a swing arm in the fwd berth and a 19" Toshiba w/dvd on a removable swing arm on the port side arch that will do double duty in the rear berth when I am finished. Waiting on a 22" Toshiba w/dvd for salon. Used the existing glowmax with amplifier w/o modifcations and pick up all local (Chicago) HD channels. The analog channel reception is still very poor. I guess the glowmax was not a arch mounted frisbee and just ahead of it's time.

Swapped the TV this weekend with a 32" Sharp and it came out awesome. Pics come in crystal clear with the factory antenna. Pics to follow!

Hey I have those POS PANASONIC Tube/VHS combo tv. I'd replace them if I could figure out how to get them out without tearing apart the cabinetry.

Our boat came with Sharps, all DTV compatible. The one in the cockpit is a 19" HDTV/DVD combo that I replaced witha 32" Sharp HDTV.

Here are some images of the 32" Sharp HDTV in the cockpit.

look for black screw caps on front of tv
remove them and remove screws
tv will slide out forward with black plywood base attached to bottom of tv

For just a little $ more you can get the Jensen marine units with built in DVD (and HD ready). All metal housings and componetry - have 2 going in right now. I've bought a few of the lower end tv / dvd combos's for the house for the kids rooms and I think they're fine for that, but not to be bounced around on a boat.

Here it is. I think it came out damn good! I would like a bezel or cover for where the wires come through the wall in the closet. I know nobody sees them but attention to detail is a must!

Majestic TVs are made for boats and RVs. They are Australian I believe. Run on 12 volts withou the need for an inverter. They are very tolerant of vibration and operate within a fairly large voltage range without causing damage. Our Sharp Aquos has been very reliable. Both brands are worthy of a look.
