I have a couple small scratches and one small hole due to what appears to be a void that finally popped. What are people paying for labor these days for a quality job? I'm looking at areas of just an inch or two in length and less.

Thanks.

Since you are in Seattle, I used John's Fiberglass Repair a little bit south of Olympia. Black Lake area. He did my transom glassing and I had him do some small repairs but mine was wrapped up in the cost of my transom... I took the boat to him...

Thanks for the reco. I may get an estimate but I am hoping to get a sense for the going rate. One of those things that I don't really have a good sense for the labor involved.

Scratches and small hole. West marine epoxy products (not to be confused with West Marine store that has clueless bimbos), are easy to do yourself. Talking minor repair, like this sounds like.

Considered that for the one that is a void that popped. But the others are scratches and they'd be super ugly if I epoxy them. It'd be a super obvious repair and I'm willing to pay to make these look like they never existed, but am curious what others have paid for a good gel coat repair job.

Call or email SR and get your gel coat color code. Go to Spectrum.com and order a gel coat paste kit. It will be the color match for your gel coat. Watch a vid or two on uTube about gelcoat repair and DIY. Super easy and it will look like a pro did it.

Thanks for building up my confidence. :)

I'll give it a DIY try.

You take Dremel tool and “v” out the scratch down to fiberglass. Mix up the gelcoat paste and with a putty knife, slightly over fill the “v.” If I remember right, cover with Saran Wrap for 30 mins or so and done. Start with like 800 grit wet sandpaper, then 1000, 1200, 1500, and finally 2000. Break out the wool pad and Buff Magic. Finish with polish and wax and like brand new....Seems like a lot, but it is not. Have your hull ID ready when you call SR.

He meant West Systems epoxy products, not West Marine. The West Marine employees would know what the product is called :). You can purchase it at West Marine. I can’t speak for your area, but the West Marines down here, hire knowledgeable fishermen, boaters and marine industry folks.

And the best part is, if you're not satisfied with your repair, grind it out and start again. Or, let a pro tackle it. You'll still only be out the money for the gelcoat. Very easy repair process - as outlined above.

Yeah...we've got pretty solid staff at West Marine. Old dudes who boat. But we also have the actual Fisheries Supply retail store in Seattle. Those guys are rock solid.
