Being a newbie, I didn't have a good sense of how to tell the performance of a 15-year old engine to one that just wasn't working right.

Turns out while replacing my outdrive, I asked the SR techs to check the fuel/air mix, since the exhaust smelled really rich. Turns out one cylinder wasn't even firing- a failed ignition wire and fouled plug.

After being fixed:
-WOT went from 4100 to 4800+ RPM
-Engine noise cut in half
-exhaust smell gone
-top speed from 25 to 30 kts
-dont have to run at WOT to stay on plane

It's like having a new boat.

Glad you are back up and running. Suggestion, if the rest of plug wires are the same age, you may want to replace them as well in the near future as they are probably in about the same condition as the one that failed. Might not be a bad idea to go with a full tune up.

I'll check, I seem to recall that they did the whole set. I know they did the distributor, too.
