What’s up?.......North, Course or Heading

Heading is my preference for most of the time. When zooming out a lot, sometimes I like North. I never use Course.

Heading up. I don't mind if it shifts somewhat while I am underway. Where I am going is always toward the top.

If by shifting you mean that your heading has deviated a bit to the left or right, there is a setting in many units of how many degrees deviation before the screen refreshes. So for example, with a low setting of say 2-3 degrees, the screen may refresh too often. I think 5-10 degrees is a good/common setting.

Heading up when under power. If there are obstacles to clear, they appear where they should with respect to the bow of the boat.

North up if zooming, setting waypoints, drifting.

OK... I'm the oddball. I like North up. I don't like the world shifting around under me.

esteban,

Thanks for the reminder. I'll check the manual. The unit is a Garmin GPSMAP 3206. I bet you're right.

I'm with you Gary....I always leave the chart North Up...I'm used to reading maps that way and have become very accustomed to thinking backwards....the admiral will vouch for that.....it's kind of like operating an RC car when it's coming at you....turn the Knob left to go right....

Radar...I leave that Heads up....

With two screens HSB'd to each other, I don't use the Overlay that often....I like things seperated....However, when Overlay goes on....both are heads up.....there goes my oddball thinking again... :smt017

I guess I should change my answer. I use it Heading up setting if moving, but do the North up when not. :smt101

Dom, I dont think my system will allow head up on the chart when using the overlay. I think it has to be course or north up.

OK what am I doing wrong?

Dave:

You are correct....Overlay on: Course Up or North Up ONLY.....which is one of the reasons that I like them on seperate screens.

Good catch....

Heading up for me too. I like to steer without a whole lot of thinking
