I saw an ad for this deck that is basically swim platform material that attaches to the outdrive. As a boat owner that has 4 legged passengers that can't stay out of the water, this seems like a nice addition. I got a load a pup that hooks onto the boarding ladder, but when installed makes the ladder unuseable for 2 legged passengers. My question is the outdrive strong enough to support the average American adult? Their web pages states it has a 500 lb static weight limit. You can google thewetdeck. Thoughts and opinions before I go drilling holes into the outdrive of my boat.

I think I would get one of those doggie ladders befor I drilled holes in my outdrive

Actually looks pretty cool. We use to use the cavitation plate on outboards all the time to get out of the water and back into the boat so I doubt a few humdred pounds will hurt anything.

My initial thought was no way, for any reason. I tried to think about it more rationally but I just cant do it.

I am by no means an authority on the subject, but having been mildly introduced to the cost of out drive replacement, repair & maintenance, I'm out.

Also, beware of that word "static". Static weight means motionless. The minute someone tries to jump off of it (i.e. uses it as a springboard), the weight is multiplied. Just bouncing up and down produces a LOT more force than just standing there, and it's not just doubling. Try it on a scale - just flex your knees and bounce without letting your feet leave the ground, and watch that dial spin like crazy.

I recently saw it in a trade magazine and it seems like a sound idea. The only thing I question is the $400 price tag. But, cost aside, good idea and I don't see it harming your drive. I wouldn't go jumping around on it, but looking at where it mounts (not on the edge of the plate) I don't think enough "leverage" would be applied to break the cav plate.

That being said... I don't think I would install it myself - simply because I would have the same thoughts you are. It would always be in the back of my head about breaking the cav plate and I would probably constantly be telling people "don't step on the edge of it - step towards the middle".
