What do you think about stringers in the bilge that are 17% wet in a 1988 searay 340 express. the boat has been sitting out of the water for two years. The engines are sitting on these stringers

First, it doesn' sound good.
Second, have they been sitting in water?
or
has it rained recently and this area is not covered allowing them to get wet off and on over years?
Can you give us more info?

17% on a scale from 1-100 for a 1988 boat is pretty darn good.

if thats the only thing go for it.
Most engine beds are worse then that and people
dont have thier engine flying out.

They need to be dried out. The limber holes should be glassed after they are dry. The stringers can be drilled from the top and bottom sides. Once they are totally dry, they can be injected with epoxy. Install dripless shafts and the boat will probably be fine. Letting stringers go means the repair cost will be about the same as the value of the boat.

RobF300 is our fiberglass expert, so I would give his opinion a lot of weight. But my concern would be that those 17% wet stringers would become rotten stringers in the future. I have replaced stringers on a smaller boat, and to do it correctly is very involved.

Thanks guys,
met with the surveyor this morning. we went through the whole boat. according to him 17% is not bad in a boat of that age.
were the moisture is around the limber holes. goblue you hit that right on the :smt021
we also had about the same amount of moisture around the cockpit window frame, both places tapped solid.
thank you for your replies
