Yesterday my wife and I took advantage of the 60 degree weather and drove to Westport. Although I live in RI I don't remember ever visting Horseneck Beach or the town. The purpose of the drive was to check out Westport Harbor and to take a look at Cuttyhunk from the tip of Gooseberry Neck. Cuttyhunk is one of the places we want to visit and thought that Westport might be a nice overnight stop crusing from Point Judith Pond. The trip from Pt judith to Cuttyhunk isn't far, but Westport Harbour and the beaches seemed very nice and it looked like alot of moorings would be available.
Do many of you visit Cuttyhunk, or is it mainly just a waypoint heading to MV or Nantucket?

Pm wetpaint or check out his blog - he seems to make it there once or twice a season - i would say cruise directly there unless somthin interests you in westport......also look at taurplan (sp) cove and tashmoo on mv

As written above, go direct........I am biased because they are my hidden gems.......Tiger Woods and myself like to take our boats where no one will find us.....kidding.....If it was me and you had two or three days, I would do Cuttyhunk, Menemsha and Lake Tashmoo..........Here are my top 5 anchorages.......

Are any of the other Elizabeth Islands open to cruisers? I have read that several, if not all, are owned by the Forbes family. I have thought about making Cuttyhunk the first leg of a cruise that includes Menemsha and Lake Tashmoo.

Yes, but there are restrictions....Tarpaulin cove (better spot for lunch and swim) and hadley harbor........

I think I read somewhere you can go ashore but guards would stop anyone from venturing inland. I would only be interested in the beaches anyway.

you would be good to go...no problem.........how many days you looking to do...

I could probably have a week a couple of times this summer. Maybe even 2 weeks in a row. With that much time, and if the weather is good, I could go anywhere. I could have 2 or 3 days most other weekends which would be more than enough time to make the trip to Cuttyhunk to hang out I would think. Then Block Island is very close to our marina so that's always an easy destination. I'm kind of hoping there are other boaters at our marina who would like to join up for cruises to the islands in the area. We bought the boat very late in the season and most of the others had already called it quits for the season.

I am also in Pt Judith at Pt Judith Marina. We often travel east and go to Cuttyhunk, the Cape, Islands, and places in Buzzards Bay. It can get a little rough off Westport, so I would just watch wind speeds (usually coming from SW) and you will have a good trip. Like others have suggested, I would also recommend Menemsha.

If you could do a week......

Day One: Cuttyhunk
Day Two: Menemsha
Day Three: Oak Bluffs
Day Four: Oak Bluffs
Day Five: Lake Tashmoo/Cuttyhunk
Day Six: Weather Window
Day seven: Home
