Boat Info
2002 340 Sundancer, All Cherry Cabin, Black Canvas.
Engines
8.1 Mercs, V Drives, 4.5kw Westerbeke.
So my last boat Baja 342 Boss had the same Genny, Westerbeke 4.5 BCGB (4.5KW) 1800 rpms it exited out the back with a through hull. I know it well as I had the boat for 6 years.

I am 2 months new tot this Sea Ray, it has the same Genny. I am in debate if i should replace the impeller right now (I have the kit) or let it go for this season, a few weeks or what, IT about a year to 1.5 years old I am told.. But to me it does not seam its pumping ALOT of water. Granted my old one did not either but it seams different to me.. I have let it run for 2-3 hours at a time and so far all is good, and the water out put is not super hot just warm. so I think its ok but figure with so many on here someone could jump in and tell me if theres looks like that too.

A dock mats 330 has a Westerbeke 4.5 but its a 3000 rpm one and its spraying water around a lot more..

that genny cooling water discharge seems about the same as mine....maybe just a little less than mine but not much....

It seems a little low to me, maybe there's some kind of restriction through the sea strainer. As long as the water is luke warm I guess it's ok, but if you already have the part I'd put it on for peace of mind.

Looks about the same as my 7.0 Westerbeke's output.

Have nothing to offer other than I wish I had a westerbeke because if I took a video of our kohler exhaust you can't even hear the water exiting since the engine is so loud :smt013 I'm jealous

Water flow looks pretty good to me though

when you get a 340 you are looking for it may have a Westerbeke genny......for reference we can watch a movie on the cockpit TV and have normal conversation in the cockpit when our genny is running.....they do run very quiet....

That's what I'm noticing as we look through the listings, a lot of them are westerbeke's. It's definitely a "soft" requirement for the next boat, not quite a deal breaker but pretty close.

For comparison - 8.0 westerbeke

That sound about what my old WB 4.5 put out as well. Did your old boat have the water muffler in line with the discharge? That might be the difference you are seeing. If I am remembering right there is a water muffler on the install on the Sea Rays...

I'd say you would be doing a goodness, fixing something that is not broken, by just replacing the impeller. My only motivation to do what you want to do would be how much time I want to spend fishing impeller fins out of the cooling water loop if the one you have now fails. That is what would motivate me to replace it..

Good Luck!!

Yes my old set up had a water muffler, and then a through hull but it was higher up out of the water, so maybe it just made it feel more dramatic cs right at the water line on the SR

I like to be ahead on maintenance things, would rather plan a repair then be forced to do one.

thanks for the responses and the other comparison video!

that depends on how long you plan to run the genny.....I would think that the sound of a loud genny would get old pretty fast especially if it were running for a long period of time.....if you do plan to run the genny a lot that may increase the importance of having a quiet running one in your decision making process....

I love having a quite one, parents 330SS has Koler and its LOUD in comparison.

I mainly use mine to sleep with AC on.

That's how mine looks.

I couldn't exist on the boat without a quiet running generator. We use it continually to keep the cabin AC running and noise would drive me insane. You can only turn up the stereo so loud to drown it out before that get's on your nerves. I'd take a Westerbeke over any of the others of this vintage and for me it would be a deal breaker. There's nothing worse than paying for something you can't stand.

ok I guess I will stop with my paranoya.

But some like that 8.0 above have pulses that spary out vs some surges of good streams so made me worry.

FWIW, that was with the stock 8x8 muffler. I replaced it with a 12x12 muffler because I hate the sound of the genny. I;m also planning on putting an inline muffler on as well.

New boat to you? Replace all impellers just good maintenance. You don't know how old they are. Never wait for an impeller to fail.
