Just checking for any local knowledge on this unit.

I'm planning on re torquing the head and setting the valves in the next week. I have the tech manual, but am wondering if anyone perfomed these hat tricks on this unit? Any special issues encountered?

Anyone found a real parts discount house for Westerbeke?

Torqueing the head and adjusting the valves is very straightforward as long as you have decent access to remove the valve cover and put a wrench where the wrench needs to go.

One thing I suggest you add to your list is to replace the exhaust elbow. Not for the reasons you might think, but because it is really hard to load up the Westerbeke with the demand you have. You will have a huge carbon deposit in the elbow which causes breathing problems. Believe it or not, the elbow is about $70 so its not worth removing and cleaning the old one..........just replace it and the clamp + the gasket.

Got about 10 inches of head room with the sound shield off so I'm good there with a mirror (grin) to help.

The heads up on the elbo is a good call. No sense futzing with it because I'm not wanting to go back there again for another 1,000 hrs. so might as well go for it now and sleep in comfort in August.

Frank, any idea what kind of discount they would offer? I'm going to have to go for about 2k at retail in parts (some sound shild parts inc.) before I'm done.

Chad,

I can't help you on discount Westerbeke parts. I just never need any, so I've never needed to shop for anything more than filters and the elbow. There are several applications for the elbow.......angles, etc. so I ordered mine thru the Sea Ray dealer so an exchange with no restocking charge was possible if needed. Even thru the dealer it was a $64 part.....again, not enough discount margin to give up the return ability.

I also have the same generator on my '95 44EB. Unfortunately I am rebuilding a short block and have been unable to find a reliable manual to get the proper torque data. Can anyone help.

I've not torn into it as yetdue to heavy use. it runs well, so I'm just going beyon spec'd PM. I useually do this kind of work in August when the ER is 110 degrees and I get double duty down in the ER as a Indian sweat lodge.

Will keep you posted.

I'll scan the troque value schedule and post it here this week end.

Your post got me thinking. I had the valves adjusted on the mains last year, but my mechanics didn't mention anything about doing the genset. I checked the Service Manual (covers your model as well as mine) and there is no scheduled maintenance chart whatsoever that I can find. The engine has only 1400 hrs and runs great.

What is the recommended number of hours recommended for this service?

every 500 hrs torque cyl head bolts and adjust the valve clearences. I just had this done.

you need publication #036746 1995 edition 4 includes most models referenced in this thread
