Westerbeke gas geneator

Hi dwna1a,
Thanks again for all your support along my journey. I think I have found guidance on removing the backend of the generator.

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/681490/Westerbeke-5-0kw-Bcg-60hz.html?page=13#manual

Any advice or suggestions if I do try to tackle this?

Thanks so much again for your expertise!

If you do decide to do this yourself. Make sure when you separate the back end form the engine, you understand the armature will remain bolted to the fly wheel and you need to be very carful removing the outer windings. Do not slide the windings on the armature or you will be replacing the backend as well.

agree. If you plan to lift the engine to transport I’d let them do the work

Thank you for the info. I was expecting that everything on the back end could be removed and then I am just transporting the engine. From your description there is a high chance of damage if a novice like me attempts to do this. Trying to move around the 300+lbs is a very difficult for myself. Open to any and all suggestions or input people have. Will reevaluate my choices.

Thanks again to everyone!

Once the outer windings (case) are removed the armature is exposed and that can be un-bolted and removed as well. The end of the armature has a bearing on it that is pressed into the outer case. When that is separated the outer case usually drops a bit and can damage the armature and/or the windings. The issue is if the windings are scraped the outer coating can be removed, and now there is a way for it to arc internally or just be shorted and you will never get the correct voltage or frequency. It can be done and very easily, the outer case needs to be suspended to the point there is no or little weight to drop. Rig up a come-a-long with a strap and you should be good.

Yes it's heavy and yes it sucks to remove. I did mine by myself and mine is a 12.5kw. That is heavy and massive to move around by yourself. Just plan it out and tie it up/off right and it can be done. And most importantly get a friend to help you.

To anyone that is tracking this or contributed. Thank you!

This saga continues and the Westerbeke generator that still sits in my garage which i have since found is a 4kw. I have continued to pour Marvel Mystery Oil into the cylinders and attempt to rotate the crank shaft and it moves with difficulty more one way than the other. I am looking for someone in my area to have a look to determine if the engine is Kaput or can be revived.

I decided against removing the generator side to make it easier to move in case I messed anything up. I have it strapped to a dolly so at least can move it around the garage and could get it to a shop.

This keeps me up at night, moving it around, repairing it, replacement. Open to any and all suggestions until I can find someone. I spoke to one generator shop here in Seattle and he said it was toast and wouldn't even look at it or entertain that it could be repaired (he was nice about it) which made my heart sink.

Thought I would drop in for an update with no update for anyone else in my shoes. Couple closing thoughts

  • Should I keep putting stuff in the cylinders?
  • Should I try to break it free or rotate the crank?
  • Should I expect a small engine mechanic to be able to handle tear down of the 3 cylinder (Mitsubishi?)
  • What are some replacement ideas for a 2000 340 Sundancer?
  • Anything else?

Thank you all again, I really appreciate your input and direction

There is a Westerbeke dealer in Southern California that does service work all the way to 100% rebuilds. I've been looking through my info trying to find the name of the company. I'll post when I find it, but I remember the name of the gentleman I spoke to was Pono.

In the meantime, maybe get a tech support guy from Westerbeke to make some recommendations.

@Mig22 had his rebuilt out that way, maybe he can share the info

Thank you again to all, I appreciate your advice.

I have:
  • Sent a private DM to @Mig22 for any input suggestions (thanks @Chris-380)
  • Been in contact with a person named Henry at Trans Pacific Distributors in Cal that does this work suggesting I could probably ship back n forth to him for the work.
More to come!
Roger

These guys are a CSR sponsor and may be able to help. I would definitely contact them.
I think they also offer a CSR discount.
