Westerbeke Auxiliary Muffler Install

Thanks, David. We heard (literally) about this from another couple we know who also have a 400 Sedan Bridge. When then Admiral heard the difference from ours, it was suggested I order one. Took very little to install, but the difference - for the better - is impressive. No longer have to worry about p-off neighboring boats when away from a shore power hookup!

Thanks for another great video Boogaboo! My genny sounds just like yours in the "before" install portion, I have had some of my raft neighbors razz me about the noise. An upgrade is in store for me as well. Where did you order it from?

That is very impressive. Great Video. Same question, where did it come from and how much was it?
Thanks again for the video, JC

Nice improvement! Did you investigate the "Hydro-hush" unit from Westerbeke? We talked about it here when they introduced it a few years ago. It replaces instead of augmenting the factory unit. My WB sits quite close to it's discharge through-hull, so it would be easier for me (and probably other Sundancer owners as well) to do a swap. I'd be interested in a cost and noise comparison of the two solutions...

I have a free sound meter app on my iPhone. I'll take a measurement of my factory muffler to establish a baseline - probably under moderate load. Mine is fairly unobtrusive under light load, but annoying while working hard.

Hi guys. Thanks for the thumbs up on this one . . .

The muffler was $300 (Canadian $) + tax/shipping and it came from a company called Anthony Keats Marine (http://www.anthonykeatsmarine.com/).

RollerCoastr, this was the only unit I was aware of. As I mentioned, we know another couple with the similar 400 Sedan and they 'tuned' us into it last summer ;-) BTW, I noticed you are (Sometimes) out of MacRay. That is where we found our Big Boy, back in 2010. Drove it 662 miles home - the long way - to our home port on Lake Simcoe, in Ontario. I got vids of that trip on YouTube, as well . . . They are somewhere amongst the nearly 400 boating videos I've shared so far - but I'm just getting started :->

I know! I found your videos before you joined CSR... IIRC, it looked like your boat was in building 3A? I enjoyed "following" you on that journey.

Hey Frank,

Interested in your take on putting one of these in front of the existing muffler on the diesel westerbeke? Would love to get that thing quieter when at anchor.....

David,

The muffler can only help with the exhaust noise. My experience with my 8.0 BTD Westerbeke is that the majority of the noise the diesel generator emits is from the valve lash and the fuel knock....i.e. that characteristic "rattle" all mechanical diesels have. The diesel Westerbeke is a very smooth running engine and the exhaust noise is relatively low, so I don't think an added muffler will help with the valve clicking and the fuel knock. The gas Westerbekes on the other hand do have a good bit of pure exhaust noise, while their engine mechanicals are pretty quiet, so I can see how a muffler will help quieten down the gasoline models.

Depending upon the hours you have on yours, if you have within shouting distance of 1000 hours, you can probably benefit from the 1000 hour service ......re-torquing the cylinder head and adjusting the valves, plus you should have the injectors removed and sent to Dixie Diesel in Columbia to have them cleaned and tested. The injectors are put in a test stand and a fluid is pumped thru then to check the spray pattern. The fluid is a solvent so checking the pattern alone usually cleans up the interior of the injector. I did this a couple of years ago.....but used a diesel service company in Pensacola due to the distance.....and the noise difference and ease of starting was noticeable. This isn't a break the bank service either.....mine didn't need anything but testing and cleaning and the charge was $75 plus whatever the cost is to have them removed and reinstalled.......takes 30 minutes. Contact Jim Patterson at Dixie Diesel if you need them......931-381-1647/800-523-4621. They are great folks to work with...honest, extremely competent and are dealers for all of the popular diesel fuel distribution systems as well as Cummins.

Not the answer you were hoping for........sorry.

Thanks Frank!

Exactly the wisdom I was hoping for. Spent the morning at the Nashville Boat Show talking to some of the guys who can come out and pull the injectors for me....

Also pulled a panel off the generator to have it color matched for tough-up paint. I will post that info once I can get it.

You didn't ask that............do you want the generator color?

Just in case, ask for 1959 Ford Truck Torch Red, code MO175

And if you want touch up paint for the Caterpillars while you are at the automotive paint store, ask for Nissan Paris White, code KH5
