WESTERBEKE 6.5 BCG

I start the gen in the electric panel first then leave the start switch on which u have to do to crank in the bilge then I go to bilge and crank with start switch and on switch once it starts I let off both switches and it runs for 5 seconds if I hit the STOP switch when it starts quitting it will keep running for 5 more seconds as many times as u hit the stop switch. I did try the carb cleaner and it will run on carb cleaner as long as u keep spraying........

Sounds like the fuel pump (lift pump) is not working. When buying a replacement pump check to make sure it runs at 2 to 4 psi. You may find an exact looking replacement but the pressure may be too high. Shop for price they can go from $30 to $300 e bay was very responsible new in box and exact bolt up. Hope this works out for you.

Sounds like more than one problem. Try turning down the governor speed adjustment. If you disconnect the linkage, it's just a motor, and will run at idle speed if the fuel pump is working. The factory instructions for resetting the overspeed controller is to hit the stop switch for a second. Sound familiar?

Caveat. Everything I am talking about is with regards to a 7.0 BCG. I thought 6.5 is for 50 hertz, 220v.

Before you do all that check the fuel filters and are you getting fuel to the carb

Did you get the manual yet?

Got a manual on line..Re-checked fuel filters both of them are like brand new and clean left bottom of fuel pump off and turned switch on fuel trickled out of bottom seems to be pumping but not sure if enough, seems to be a fairly good stream about the size of a pencil led ???

Take you old fuel pump to NAPA or a good parts store. They have replacements for $40-60. I betting that will turn out to be your problem.

The little after market electric fuel pumps work good. The fittings are typically 5/16. Your fuel line from the separator is likely 3/8". The rigid fuel line going to the carb is 1/4". You'll have to sort out your fittings with reducers and adaptors. I believe the threaded end of the pump (where the inline filter goes) is 1/8" NPT. Likewise for the threaded fitting for the rigid fuel line.
Since this is a 1987 genset, we probably don't know what pump you have on this unit. Again, my suggestions are all coming from a 1998 Westerbeke. But, in general, they all work the same.

Thanks everyone so much for your input it's so great to have so much help,I'm gonna get a fuel pump and a oil sensor also gonna borrow my mechanic pal's digital tach just to double check and make sure on the RPM's. I will keep in touch, when I go back I will update Thanks again to everyone !!!

does anyone have a part # for an aftermarket fuel pump that is an exact fit for a 6.5 BCG.??

Can you verify the year, and possibly provide some pictures? The oldest 6.5 I see referenced is a 1989. Any chance this was installed aftermarket?
Perhaps laid out like this one?

I think the pumps are pretty much universal. Just take the old one with you. I have replaced 3 over the years on different boats, all came from NAPA.

370 Dancer mine looks just like the picture you have mine's an 87 but it looks almost new 300 hrs. Laid out just like the one in the picture. I'll go to NAPA those guys are pretty good here...

Baker, just asking here, was the carb rebuilt?

I talked with my guy tonight and he asked that question. The needle values are very small and even a small grain of sand can foul one

No, the carb hasn't been rebuilt I put a front bearing and seal in the governor...

Ok got a digital timing light hooked up and it is defiantly over reving about 2400 rpm suppose to be 1900, I tried adjusting the speed screw but it doesn't change anything it just keeps reving up to around 2400 rpm....??????

should be 1800. Until you fix that, it will keep shutting down. You should look at the linkage between the governor and the carb. If you disconnect it, the engine should run at idle. You should then be able to manually rev it to somewhere around 1800, and note the distance to the governor arm. Hate to say it, but it sounds like the governor isn't governing.
You have to get to a stable 1800 RPM before the generator will be any good to you.

Just about to pull my hair out !!! I can take the wires off the oil sending unit and leave them off crank and it starts and it will run as long as I hold the run switch down I can pull back on the governor linkage and slow it down to 1700-1800 rpm let off the switch and it still goes dead. I don't understand why it runs with the oil wires off ?? Put on a new oil sender and it does the same thing nothing changes....

From your description it DOES NOT RUN with the wires off the OP switch and you release the run switch. Sounds to me like there is a problem with the wiring from the OP switch to the electric fuel pump. I assume you have connected the 2 wires from the OP switch to see if it makes any difference. Have you checked all the fuses?

Because you are bypassing the oil pressure switch by holding down the (wait for it) bypass switch.
Simply, as long as all sensors are happy, 12V is allowed to flow to the ignition. As soon as one of these says no, no more 12V. When you let go of the bypass switch, you are now allowing the broken connection at the oil sensor to say no. I still think you are overspeed by over adjusting before you got the governor rebuilt. Please, leave all sensors connected, disconnect the governor linkage to the carb, start her up, and let's see if you have a working engine.
