Ok was coming in yesterday and generator quit, turned everything off and tried to restart and it started and revved up and quit it will do this every time you try to start it, starts reves up then shuts off ??????? Any ideas, sounds kinda like its running away like the governor quit or something like that.....640 Hrs on Gen.....Thanks for any help......

Have you checked the oil in the motor?

Yes I checked it before we went out and it doesn't use any oil at all. Anti-freeze is also full tune up this spring....

I will check the governor oil next weekend I haven't checked that.....I'm going to check it all out its cooling off next weekend finally..........

Agreed on the governor being the problem. Good chance it's the oil but could be a linkage issue. Sticking, broken spring, etc. BTW it doesn't take much oil and there is a fill line on the housing. Do not fill to the top.

Mine did the same thing when I got my boat. It turned out to be a bolt holding an idle finger being loose on the carb.

Well I'm at the boat, I got the governor off and it appears the front bearing is bad it has some front to back play that moves the carb lever but it also has a lot of shaft play all around can't get the pulley off because it seems to have a roll pin, will carry it home to the work bench and see what I can find. Hopefully I can find some bearings and the shaft is ok,not having much luck finding any parts listed anywhere...

Ok got the governor torn down and everything seems to be ok except the front bearing and seal thats the parts I need,if anyone has any advice on these parts I can use that information. No one seems to carry parts any longer checked a couple of places without any luck. Going to try a bearing place in Memphis this week hopefully they can help. Thanks in advance for any response...B.B.

You can get the bearings and shaft seal. I will look for the part number for the bearing now. I think the old one is in my desk

I just went thru my desk and don't see it. The numbers were stamped into the bearing. It took some cross referencing but it was easy to find as was the front and rear seals. Be sure to check the shaft and clean it up. Check it for burrs or burn spots. A friend of mine from Continental rebuilt mine for less than $20

Thanks dwna1a for the reply my best friend is a mechanic and he helped me tear it apart and i'm going to do just that and try and match the parts at a bearing place in memphis that has been in business for about 75 years I will check the shaft thanks again for the reply...B.B.

Governor experts please chime in here !! The only real concern I have now is when the bearing came apart the balls flew around inside the case for a short time and it has some dings in some places and on the weights although nothing serious just small marks.do you think that will affect the operation of the governor, balance maybe ???? everything still moves freely and like I said no deep cuts or anything like that.....

I will take your question to the guy who did mine and see what he might say. It will be later in the week.

Mine had a few nicks in it, mostly on the shaft where the bearing failed. I will let you know what he has to say, if that will help

Ok, thats fine thanks a lot, most of mine are on the balancer or whatever you call it. I got the parts today going to put it back together in a couple of days. I don't think any of the marks on it will make a difference they're really not that bad at all. Thanks again my thought is the more info the more knowledge everyone's 2 c worth is worth a lot to me,more like a dollar !!!!! THANKS dwna1a........B.B....

Ok just got the Governor back on and the Generator cranked right up ran for about one minute then shut off. Tried to re-crank and it wouldn't start. Cleaned all my tools up (15 min) tried to start it again cranked right up ran 10 seconds and shut off again waited 15 minutes and does the same cranks right up then shuts off ???

Sounds like it may be shutting down due to an over speed. Do you the manual to go thru the adjustment procedure?

Your generator has 3 shut down safety switches, exhaust temp, oil pressure, and over speed, the generator run speed is 1800 rpm if it’s a little to high it will shut down

Does it pump water? Doubt it's overtemp in 10-15 seconds. Could be bad sensor for oil, exhaust or overspeed. Need to eliminate the overspeed first by using a digital timing light with built in tach. If that checks out then make sure the oil is up to the full mark and by pass the oil pressure shut down sensor. If still a problem then by pass the exhaust temp sensor.
