Finally got my 4.5 Westerbeke running properly, it was backing firing through the carb. The voltage was 120vac. After a carb rebuild the genny was running great. After about 10 min I got a white smoke from the front (generator) section of the unit. I powered it down and later on fired it back up. No more smoke but now only out putting 25 vac. So I want to take a look at the electrical in there but cannot access the area. Is that one 13mm bolt in the middle of the cover the only thing holding that cover on? My cover does not feel like it wants to budge with that bolt out. Also any ideas on the low voltage issue please shoot them at me.. Thanks!!

Thanks, it looks like the one bolt but need a confirmation before I start to force...

Can someone let me know how to access the capacitor? Thank you...

I had a buddy come over who has lots of experience with such things and we tried to get into mine for about half a day........ it was fruitless. I called the Westerbeke dealer and he sent a guy over who had it torn down, diagnosed and new part ordered in about a half an hour. Came back when the capacitor showed up, installed it, checked it and tightened up a few things in less than a half hour. Its worth the money to have an expert do it.

Getting to the capacitor is easy, I just changed mine. First you need to remove four screws from the cover plate - this is located on the end of the genny opposite the belt. Be sure to have all power off, including shore power. With the cover off, you may have to pull some wires out of the way to expose the capacitor itself - it is located right next to the fuse holder. To remove it, you need to remove the two screws that hold the fuse holder in, and then the capacitor should slide right out.

If you have good access to that end of the genny, it's a five minute job.

I may have an older model? I only have 1 screw under a cap at the very end of the generator. There seems to be a middle piece I started to try to get off.. Take a look.. Thanks.

Interesting...yeah my 4.5 Westerbeake looks different than that. You learn something new each day. Mine is a 4.5 BCCG in my 2002 320DA.

I have a 2000 340DA with a 4.5 BCGT. Anyone else have knowlege on getting at the capacitor? Thanks.

Anyone out there know how to open this up to see the capacitor?

Ok, From what I see I have to remove what they call the wrap around.. looks like the wiring panel is in the way. I will take a look..
