I am trying to replace the flywheel on my 11.0 BTD, bad ring gear. I have the engine suspended and all of the bolts out of the flange (Would be bell housing) and I can not spate the generator from the engine. I don´t want to force anything at this point in fear of breaking it.

I have never done this before, plenty of transmissions but never a generator. Anyway do I just pull the gen from the engine at this point or is there more that needs to be done? Is the armature floating and while I damage the unit by just pulling it off? I know the fan wheel is bolted to the flywheel, but the manual does not cover this stuff.

I posted the same question over at boat diesel but figured it couldn't hurt posting it here as well.
Thanks, any help is welcome.

So as it turns out there is a bearing on the end of the rotor which is pressed on. You need to use a puller to get the outside housing off. The rotor is bolted to the flywheel so I need to be real careful not to damage it while removing the housing. Going to try this tomorrow I'll post back on how I make out.

Well everything came apart like it was just put together with a little persuasion. Man those windings are heavy. I just have to replace the ring gear and it will be like new, previous owner had replaced the starter in lue of the ring gear. Now that it's apart I am going to replace the mounts and paint everything up.

Sweet, I know what your going through. I just pulled and re-installed a trans in a Nissan Maxima to replaced the rear crank oil seal. There is nothing right about front wheel drive!

Yeah, a couple drips of oil takes a couple days work. For me the ring gear looked brand new except for about 3-4 inches of chewed up gear. The engine must have always stopped in the same place most of the time ...

Bad news I had to pull trans again. missed a surface that should have had rtv sealer and had another oil leak at the rear main. I'm getting good only took 1 1/2 hrs to pull. Hope yours is going well!

Ugg, man that hurts ...

Yea mine is all a part, with lots of new parts ordered. I figured since it's all apart, I might as well put in some more time and re-paint and place any rusted parts. So now I am redoing the mounts as I found cracks in the aluminum blocks. She should look new when I am done. She already purred like a kitten, except for the starter thing. So a little TLC should go a long way.
