Do we have any West Point Lake boater out there? What is the lake like? How is the boating? Any good place to eat, stay, boat?

Nobody has been on West Point Lake??

I have been there with a friend on his boat to wakeboarding.

Kevin27,
Thanks for the info, what type of boats were on the lake? Pontoons, Bass, Ski, or cruisers? Trying to get a feel for the lake. Somebody was saying it mainly is a fishing lake???

West Point is not just a fishing lake although people do fish it alot. My friend has a 24' non Sea Ray boat that we use for wakeboarding. There is two small marinas, one on the Ga side and the other on Al side down by the dam. Most boats on the lake are less than 25 feet, but there is some houseboats, smaller snailboats, and a late 80s 340 sundancer at the Al marina last time I was there. My friend gets off the interstate at the LaGrange exit and uses the Sunny Point ramp. Be carefull when you leave this ramp. About 200-300 yards down river from the ramp is an old road with the middle cut out to make it deeper and can be very shallow on the sides when the water is down. Old roads and boat parts don't mix well.$$$$. Get a map of the lake and go explore. The marina on the Ga side has a campground if you like camping and boating. Let me know if your going or have any other questions.

The Chattahoochee river feeds West Point. Not the cleanest lake . For years they have issued reports throughout the year when or when it is not safe to eat fish out of West Point. It is south of the City of Atlanta.:smt101

Thanks for the info. I'm going down Tuesday to talk with the people at The Settings Of West Point.

O crap, em I gonna die? It has been at least three or four months since I was in the water with no adverse effects. How long does it take to get sick?

Probably not an issue, don't they only have a problem when Atlanta let raw stuff into the river when it rains so hard it overflows their system.

Well I guess I'm ok because it wasn't raining much during that time. Dodged the bullet on that one. One other thing, if I died my wife could buy a new boat with the insurance money, only problem is I would be DEAD. Oh well, the new boyfriend and her would have a nice new toy.

Oh geez, not the old "the lake is dirty" crap.

Back in the 1980's, West Point was known as a monster largemouth bass lake, and it was attributed to the phosphates being ejected by the City of Atlanta. It was also said in a report by the University of Georgia to be very polluted because of the effluent being put into the lake by Atlanta.

As much as I hate to admit this ( I attended the University of Georgia), it was later determined that the data was incorrect. The students from UGA had incorrectly read the instrumentation, and the lake was never as polluted as reported. Atlanta has since reduced the effluent being pumped into the lake.

I live on West Point and fish it regularly. There are guidelines in the fishing regulation book issued by the State of Georgia, and West Point seems to be no worse than any other lake in the Chattahoochee-Flint Basin.

West Point is primarily a fishing lake. There are several things going on that might change that. Troup County is working to develop Pyne Road Park into a more boating-friendly spot. On the 4th of July, there is a large fireworks display there that can be viewed on your boat (or on my dock!). The West Point Lake Coalition is also working to create more boat events. Their annual Poker Run is a lot of fun. Both marinas have restaraunts, but the quality of those has been a little suspect. The folks at both have been working hard to improve them, however.

I've been on West Point for longer than I'd care to admit, and the future has never been brighter for the lake. The City of LaGrange has FINALLY gooten serious about leaning on the Corps, and as a result, our lake level is higher than it has been in years.

Try not to let everyone know, but West Point is the best kept secret in boating!

Chuck,
Went to West Point yesterday, but did not get a chance to go out on the lake. Notice quite a few people on it including some jet skies. How warm is the water at this time of year?? Sure looked like you are at full pool did not notice much exposed shoreline around the lake where I was. Have you heard of the Settings at West Point Lake?

We're still 2 foot below full pool.

Part of the reason the lake looks so full is that we were low for so long that a lot of vegetation gre up on the exposed shoreline, and the water has risen up above that growth.

The water is pretty warm, not warm enough for me, but the kids are screaming to get out and go skiing. During the week, there a quite a few local folks out on Jet-skis, but that number doesn't seem to increase over the weekend. If Lanier continues to be low all summer, I expect that could change.

I have heard of The Settings, but I haven't ventured up to take a look at it. I know they have an office on the Square downtown, and have spent a lot of money on advertising.

What exactly are you looking for? I went through the process of finding a lot for our house about 4 years ago, and although I'm not an agent (disclaimer: I do NOT sell real estate!), I do know a good bit about whats available on the lake.

What did you think of The Settings

Chuck,
Great to hear back from you. Thanks for the info about the lack of exposed shoreline. As to the Settings not a whole lot to look at yet at the site. They are still putting in the infrastructure. I meet with them at the office on the square and agree with you about them spending a lot of money on advertising. Wish I would have had more time and a nicer day. Really wanted to get out a see what the lake was like.

Chuck,
Had the opportunity to see The Settings from the lake over the weekend. The kids wanted to go tubing, so I dragged them all the way up the river to take a look.
The site looks pretty cool; sits up on a bluff, and most of the lots should have awesome lake views. Geographically, it might be a little difficult to get to, but its on the same end of town as Wal-Mart, so it might not be too inconvenient.
The lake looks awesome right now, and is less than a foot below summer pool! If any of you Lanier guys are looking for a wet place for your boat, come on down!

On another note, we have a new restaurant that just opened up at Highland Marina. Chef Tulla White, who already owns several restaurants in downtown LaGrange, just opened
641 Grill. 641 (the elevation of the lake is 635), features items from his downtown restaurants and will have a full lake type menu as well. Tulla's restaurants ( The Basil Leaf, Vennucci, Tulla's Bayou Bar and Grill) are all very good, and there is no reson to expect 641 to be any different. Not affiliated, yada, yada, just a satisified patron.

Chuck,
Thanks for the update. Did you see any activity going on at the Settings, or was it just the billboard? I think it was going to be a couple years down the road until they built the marina.

Chuck

I travel the US on a regular basis and have to admidt the Basil Leaf has the best Menu and food I have ever had. The Salmon wraped in pasta is to die for.
I will be staying in LaGrange this Wed and will have to check out the real estate.
How much are the lots in the Settings at West Point Lake?

I would love to check out the lake from the water some time. Hint,Hint!!!

No activity as of yet. I really don't have any idea what their schedule is.

I'm going to meet Caroline at the Settings office at 1 PM tomorrow.
She said they start at 125K and top at 300K for 3 acres of water front.
Kia factory is opening in 2009 value should increase. Might be a good speculation op.
