Were my expectations too high???

I bought a new Stingray 3 years ago and had a ton of problems with it. They were poor quality contruction related problems, not cosmetic. Very annoying.
This year I bought an 03 280da with 120 hours on it from my local dealer and they insisted on going through the whole boat before I took delivery. (they found a leak from the oil pan in one of the engines and had to pull it and replace the gasket).
The captain went over every part of the boat during orientation so we were assured everything was working and nothing was damaged. He gave us a 30 day warranty during which he had to replace a tach, replace outdrive trim sender and give us a new battery!
Point is, I now have a boat that runs perfectly, looks terrific and I have utmost confidence in the dealer for any future service.
My opinion is a lot of the things JohnR describes could/should have been discovered during orientation. Dealer problem, not Sea Ray problem.

Every new boat comes with a punch list, it's just a matter of how long it is. Everyone is upset when you buy a big ticket item and it needs work right out of the box but I believe this is a systemic problem in the boating industry especially during this econony and what gas prices did to boating last year. Genmar with 13 boat brands under it's umbrella filed for bankruptsy last month and Brunswick, which produces Sea Ray and a host of other boat brands is feeling the pinch also. Some Sea Ray employees have been furloughed, others on a 4 day work week, all not knowing where the industry is headed. In the quest to produce more with less quality has suffered at Sea Ray and it appears it's more in the fit and finish areas as opposed to engine, drive unit, etc. The bad work coming from the Sea Ray plants has overwhelmed dealers and they are using their in stock parts inventory to fix new boats because support from Sea Ray is so bad right now. None of this is an excuse but it is the state of the industry at this point in time. Sea Ray, and all of Brunswick, will weather this storm and your dealer will be there next year and the years after that. Many new boat owners can't say that.

CHICKEN........

Thanks for the constructive replies everyone.

I'll keep y'all updated on how the boat shopping goes.

The forum has been very helpful with getting educated on the buying process. I have loads of boating experience from my college days-- I'm looking forward to finding a gem lake boat to have my kids out on the water skiing and boarding too. Again, many thanks for the helpful replies.

21 posts and you've already downloaded the troll detector?

Thanks Todd.... And what's that smell ???

PS: k-nine maybe you should let the people "INVOLVED" work it out and not jump in when it is not ASKED or needed....

My "CHICKEN" was in reference as I quoted was dunking the Toyota in salt water.... So get on with it and get over it....

It's ok you don't have to do that.

This is a great thread. I'll toss in one thing for the new guys, perfection is certainly a matter of perception and experience IMO. I think the more boat brands you look at and the wear and tear they show in comparison to Searay's the more your experiences will lead you toward Searay. The perception is all yours. I certainly would take the info in this thread to heart as these are some highly experienced boaters on here and some straight shooters. But pay attention to the number of posts cause that is where you weigh the experience.

Me, I am just a happy boater.

Best of luck!
