Well, Sundays are now shot.

In NC looking at property. Got seated in a local eatery and ordered beers while we perused the menu. Glanced up at one of the many TV on the wall. NBA on with majority of players in the BLM garb.

So what it is it you are protesting? Police brutality? .....check the stats......does not make any sense. Systemic racism?.....uh...where? Aren't there laws against that?

Yep.....I am officially out.

Seems that just about everyone I talk to about this subject is opting out of watching any sports on TV.

Nobody can go to a game because of the virus. Wonder what would happen if everyone lost interest in the variuous sports and quit watching games on TV. How long would it take, with none of that revenue coming in for the team owners to do something about the kneeling?

I stopped watching baseball after that strike years ago when they stopped the session in the middle.

I stopped watching the NFL as soon as I realized that Kraperneck want going to be a one off. I used to be a huge Ravens fan, but now I can't even name three current team members.
I know it's not the usual practice to quote one's self, but I saw that the NHL had it's 1st kneeler. No backlash from the league yet. Guess I won't be supporting the NHL from now on as well. Thanks to the flipping snowflakes, all sports are dead to me now.

I posted this over in Face Shields but thought it was relevant here too

The possibility of holding some form of the 2020 college football season during a pandemic has sent folks scurrying to research the 1918 season. That's when the Spanish Flu outbreak ravaged the World. The flu, which came in multiple waves from 1918-1919, killed more than 675,000 in the United States.

Not only was there a deadly pandemic in 1918, but World War I was still winding down. According to a report in the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier, 18 schools did not play football in 1918 because of the flu and the war.

While there were some who felt college football should completely shut down because of the pandemic, President Woodrow Wilson felt that football added to the overall morale of the country. As a result, football teams were created at various military posts around the country and actually played against established college teams.

“It would be difficult to overestimate the value of football experience as a part of the soldier’s training,” President Wilson wrote in a letter that was eventually published in 1919.

Many schools were not able to play until late October or early November. The annual Army-Navy game was not played. Many schools played only three or four games.

One of the teams that played almost a complete schedule in 1918 was Georgia Tech, coached by the legendary John Heisman. The Golden Tornadoes, as they were known then, played a seven-game schedule with six of those games played at home at Grant Field.

And despite the threat of the flu, fans turned out at Georgia Tech. The photo that accompanies this story is of an undetermined 1918 Georgia Tech home game that was taken by a student, Thomas Carter, who graduated in the 1920s with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. It’s clear that the vast majority of the spectators in the photo were wearing masks in what published reports said was the peak of the flu in October and November.

Georgia Tech, which had won the national championship the year before, did not start its season until Oct. 5. And when it started playing there was no slowing down the Golden Tornadoes. They beat Furman 118-0, The Oglethorpe 11th Calvary 123-0 (in a game that was stopped after the third quarter), and N.C. State 128-0.

In fact, Georgia Tech outscored its first five opponents 425-0.

Heisman, as you might recall, was never bashful about running up the score as his 1916 team beat Cumberland 222-0 in the most lopsided game in NCAA history. Georgia Tech led that game 126-0 at halftime.

The biggest game of the season came when Georgia Tech, 5-0 and on a 33-game winning streak, went to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers of Pop Warner, who had a 30-game winning streak. Pittsburgh won 32-0 at Forbes Field before a crowd of 30,000. The game was played to benefit military charities.

That game was on Sunday, Nov. 23. Five days later, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, Georgia Tech closed out its season with a 41-0 win over Auburn at Grant Field.

A Georgia Tech game that was scheduled with Pennsylvania was cancelled when the Spanish flu went through Philadelphia.

There was a Rose Bowl after the 1918 season, but back then it was called the Tournament East-West game. With so many teams lacking players because of the war, the game was scheduled between two military institutions that had fielded team, Great Lakes Navy of Illinois and Mare Island Marines of California. Great Lakes Navy won 17-0. The MVP of the game was George Halas, a future Hall of Fame coach of the Chicago Bears.

According to records 25,000 attended the game.

So here we are, about 115 days from the start of college football season, wondering if the games of 2020 will, in fact, be played. And if the games are played, will there be fans in the seats? And if there are fans in the seats, would they be willing to wear masks as they did in 1918?

We certainly don't know. We just know that the world has changed a lot since 1918,

Stay tuned.

Why is it always the good guys

Jonathan-Isaac3.jpg

Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac was diagnosed with a torn ACL on Sunday night after going down with the injury in a game against the Sacramento Kings.
Isaac suffered the tear in his left knee – the same knee in which he suffered a devastating injury to in January. That one was supposed to be a season-ending injury, however, the coronavirus pandemic paused the NBA and it gave him more time to recover for the restarted season.

Watching NHL game 5 Toronto and Columbus... not a single person knelt for either anthem

Ya know Mike, I thought/think the same as you. And then this morning I see a FB post on a potential new player for the Seahawks and noticed there were like 800+ comments so I decided to read a few. Early on, one person stated he was through with the NFL for reasons similar to mine. He was then lambasted by literally hundreds of people telling him stuff like, Bye, bye; Don’t let the door hit ya; and on and on.

One guy said he was a vet and fought for the flag and our freedom and wasn’t going to watch a bunch of rich spoiled athletes disrespect what he fought for. He too was unceremoniously told the flag was just a piece of cloth and freedom was an illusion and he was a fool. I then started to look at a few of the profiles of these Mensa members and yep....nothing but a bunch of mis-guided, liberal snowflake sheeple with no spine or values. But there were so many of them and then it took me a minute to remember where they were from....all from the NW and the Seattle area and it all made sense.

However, at that time, I realized that there are many liberally-governed cities in the NFL that believe Colin Krapperneck was right, BLM is not a militant, fascist organization and ANTIFA is no more dangerous than a Sunday school class. Now I’m worried that those of us that have chosen to not watch, sadly may be the minority. I am so saddened by the current state of our country right now that I want to puke and for the first time I’m worried that the Dems could win Nov. 5th.

In 4 weeks I leave for a week in Aruba and I am looking forward to being out of this country for a week. Pleas have it all fixed by the time I return.
Shawn

let me get this straight. you are on a boating forum, you must own a boat, and you are wondering what you are going to do with sundays?

I was wondering the same thing. The Title should read "Well, Sundays are now free". To be fair, I've always wondered why people enslave themselves to the activities and schedule of some sports team, to begin with.

Shawn, I'm with you. The left side of this state (politically and geographically speaking) is the vocal minority you are hearing. What I HOPE for is that there is a silent majority of us priveleged right leaning folk who are sick and tired of the way things are being done in the areas along the "I-5 Corridor" which includes Seattle, Portland and all the smaller cities along that path.

I watch a lot of news about Seattle and Portland and other areas where ANTIFA holds their Sunday school parties and I'm starting to see a lot of backlash from us right leaning folks. I'm starting to see more and more peaceful protests by flag waving Americans who are tired of all this rioting crap being shoved down their throats. They are going face-to-face with the ANTIFA crowd and are beating them down.

I love it. Enjoy your trip. We may not have all the ANTIFA butts kicked by the time you get back but we're having fun working on it.

It was a family tradition to watch the NFL on a crisp fall or cold winter afternoon. We'd be at the cabin, have chips and pretzels and watch the game with the adults. It's just what we did. That tradition is now lost in my family.

I have never been a football fan. When the Colts moved to Indianapolis (btw I hated how they left Baltimore) I thought I would give it a try. I have not missed an Indy 500 in 45 years. I have 16 tickets and I thought I would do the same thing with the Colts. I ordered 12 and got zero. So I never got the hang a football.

When players started kneeling it made me sick. For decades I hated that you could actually burn the American flag. I have finally resigned myself that millions have fought and died for people’s right to burn the flag or step on it. I still do not like it. Heck, in some countries you could be executed:

Since I don’t watch football I’ve been told that TV does not show the playing of the National Anthem anymore. i’ve been telling my football friends that since they are thinking about playing a BLM anthem I bet they show the National Anthem again. Because they’re going to want to show them standing for the BLM and sitting or kneeling for the National Anthem.

I have some really good friends that love the Colts and the Pacers and have tickets. They have told me if the teams start kneeling they are done with them.

A few decades ago my Sunday’s were spent watching IndyCar and NASCAR. NASCAR has gotten too political and the drivers are spoiled.

This is how I feel about the National Anthem. We’ve been on TV at the Indy 500 four out of the last five years. This is my group holding my 15’ x 25’ American flag. They showed us for 11 seconds

God Bless America.

The American flag flies on my boat and front yard. When I go camping and to the races I take a 20 Foot flag pole so she and a Marine flag can be flown.

Ah...IndyCar. I'm a huge motorsports fan, mainly NASCAR but since my son has raced with and against a bunch of IndyCar drivers I have become a fan. We became good friends with Mark Dismore Sr and Jr. We pitted with them at nationals when my son raced karts. He raced against both of them too. Mark Jr and Dan Wheldon were best friends and ran a race at the track owned by Dismores in New Castle, IN called the Robo-Pong 200. Robo-Pong is owned by Josef Newgardens family. Mark Jr told me he was going to start racing less and him and Wheldon always teamed up for the Robo Pong. I mentioned that my son would join up with them and share driving duties. You were allowed to have between 2-4 drivers for this race. Mark was going to talk to Wheldon about it but Wheldon had messed his schedule up and signed up for a race in Australia the same weekend so didn't race it. The week before that rave he was killed in a race in Vegas. Mark Jr withdrew from that race and Mark Sr and Newgarden took their spot and won the race. We never met Wheldon. But yeah, my son raced against Sage Karam (I have talked to Sages dad Jody a few times), Josef, Spencer Pigot, Santino Ferrucci, Conor Daly, and NASCARs Austin Self, Matt Tifft, Jamie MacMurray, and the original Eric Jones (the one from about 20 years ago). Eric was the importer for the brand we raced and Dismores were dealers. We all pitted together at nationals. We never got to the level those guys did. Our budget was just too small. Those guys had fresh engines every race and would spend $10,000 each nationals weekend. Our ANNUAL budget was about $5000...lol. Our best race was a field of 43 karts. Pole was 54.9 and we qualified at 55.3 and were 15th but got spun in the 5th turn (asphalt road course) and finished the heat race about 25th. Made it up to about 13th in the final until the kart in front of him spun in turn 1 and he hit him almost head on and bent our axle pretty bad. Wasn't his best finish but was the most competitive he had ever been. lol. Oh well. Sorry to get off topic but those were fun times. We owed Dismores quite a bit after that weekend as we had a big list of parts we got from them.

Just curious, what was so wrong about how the Colts left Baltimore? Would you hang around a city if state legislators were threatening eminent domain to take your business?

At the Indy 500 quite a while ago... I took a pee beside Grizzly Adams shoulder to shoulder in those piss troughs. He was pretty drunk and funny as hell ... that’s all I got :)

If you guys do a search for Mark Dismore you will see what he is most famous for. Horrific crash in Indy 500 practice about 1991. Broke his neck. He came back and raced again and won a race in Texas several years later. He is the one that got Tony Stewart his IndyCar ride. They were teammates in the late 90's. Mark Jr had a pretty promising career but it wasn't his passion the way it needed to be. I actually know Jr better than Sr. Talked to Sr a few times but have talked to Jr quite a bit. Last time was about 3 or 4 years ago he emailed me and invited us to nationals that was at our local track. My son was done racing by then and had lost interest so we didn't go. Ryan Tuckers kids raced with us too (Rams and Browns OL). He was huge. His kids were younger than my son and raced in a younger group but they were pretty big too and had a weight disadvantage because of it so were never very competitive. They quit racing and not sure what they moved on to.

Another funny story. We were at nationals at our local track and my mother was there. I pointed to Ryan and said thats the guy that played in the NFL. She pulled her camera out and said she was going to sneak a picture pretending she was taking a picture of a tent. I told her she didn't need to do that so I yelled for Ryan to come over. They raced at our track every weekend so I talked to him often. Oddly, the tent she took the pic of was Austin Selfs tent. Fast forward a few years and he is now in NASCAR and an NFL'er is in the same pic...lol. The only ones of all those names mentioned that we ever talked to was Dismores, Austin Self, Sage Karam, Matt Tifft, Jamie MacMurray, and maybe a couple others. Never actually talked to or met any of the others as far as I can remember. Have to get that pic off my other computer. Can't find it now

I did not know that. So I guess it was OK that they left in the middle of the night. Thank you for the information.

So you have to add Saturday to your thread title...

Not for the same reason though..... nice to see the players trying to fight back

It was an ugly negotiation in Baltimore and many believe they would have passed the eminent domain had the Colts not jumped first. At least the only one that mattered did, Bob Irsay. LOL
