Well its official,I am now the owner of a 1987 268 Sundancer. Overall its in pretty good condition for the age not perfect, but im guessing any boat 23yrs old will not be.
Well it needs a good cleaning and a standard walk through to tighten things and what not,but I found a problem with leaking windows :(
Its the 2 windows on the sides that where the v berth is. I noticed a wet spot on the cushions,The one window looks like it is missing edge of the window right where it gets real narrow and has like a 1/4 inch missing and the other looks like it is leaking where the rubber stripping meets the window.
I guess the good news is that it doesnt look like it was going on for a long time, nothing feels rotten and the head board lining isnt stained, but is leaking and needs fixed.
How do I go about doing this?
It is cold and I wont get around to fixing this for another 2 months,so I figure I will take a shop vac and suck out all I can from the window tracks and dry it with a towel and tarp up that area,Sound good for now?
But overall it looks ok.....So Far im sure as I get more familiar I will find more time consuming projects, ahhh that feeling is back,to know what it feels like to own a boat :)

If you can't fix it now - I'd certainly dry things out as much as you can and cover it. If you are expecting freezing temperatures it may make things a little worse as any water inside cracks, etc may freeze and expand. Heated storage may not be possible but would certainly help dry things out and keep it from getting worse at this point. A small cabin heater may help as well.

This thread is worthless without pics!

You can get your point across better with this!

Well Done! How do you do that???
I agree about the pics. I had an older 260 that didn't have windows in the v-berth so I can't "picture" it in my head!

It doesnt seem to leak around the frame it self, but it looks like where the window sits in the frame,it just collects water and as you can see the weather stripping is in pieces and just finds its way inside. I looked it is well sealed around the frame where it meets the boat,it looks like I need to seal around the actual window, can anyone help on how to do this? The pic with the white thing in the corner of the window is a napkin I shoved in there to help stop the water,so there is actually no window there,I have no idea how that happened? I can take better pics if needed tomorrow but for right now I just held my camera up and shot what I could.
lol,I agree everything is better with pics

Any instructions on how to remove the window, and where I could get some new rubber stripping for the window?

You need to speak to Spookeay.

I won't say a word about the grey tarp... ;-)

Nice boat, enjoy her!

I have a similar issue with my windows and am looking for the replacement rubber. Mine is all there, but it is not as soft as it once was, and does not sit tight aginst the glass. As a test I put some masking tape on the rubber to hold it to the glass whilel washing the boat and no leaks.

Anyone out there know where to get the replacement rubber for these type of windows?

Contact TaylorMade. I found it on their site but never called to get a price...

Profitofdoom, check the track drains, the 6" grey plastic pieces on the bottom track are the drains and if the drains are clogged with any crap, water sits in the track and eventually seeps into the boat. The cleaner and less restrictive the track drains are the better off you will be, you don't want water sitting in that track, this is were the most water comes from on boats with this style window.

Previously I had a 1986 2300 weekender with a leaky window problem. First I removed all the old silicone around the window frames and recaulked. I then ordered from the local Marine Max dealer the window tracking material that sits inside the window frame. If I remember correctly the windows do not come out so removing the old material has to be cut out and scraped out piece by piece. After this is complete clean the track the window sits in really good as you don't want any old material left in the tracking or the new material will not slide properly. I believe you can cut the new gasket into 2 pieces one for the top and one for the bottom. Because the old material is out, the window is loose which should allow you to feed the new gasket material into the track and slide it from one side to the other starting with the top. As I recall it took about 4 hrs for the first window and much less time for the second as I had figured out what to do. Wish I could give you more detail however it has been about 6 years since I did this and that is much to long for me to remember all the details.
Good luck.

Nice Boat. Glad to see you got her home and all. Try to get her dried out asap if you can.

About that tarp... Maybe some sorta pole or rope sloping forward and aft from your arch. Then a bigger tarp draped over it all.... Although most our snow is done, we'll see some pretty heavy rains in the spring!

I've got a few leak issues too. Cleaning the side window drains helped allot. Bow rails and hatch glass are my next leaks to fix.

Doesn’t look like you have the acreage room I have. I built a boat house to park mine in. Keeps it dry and clean all summer too. That’s why I mentioned the full boat cover. If you figure shrink wrapping vs building something simple and inexpensive, your money ahead real soon. ie: 50X50 tarp is about $50.
