Well I am an active day trader and I have a debit card tied to my smaller account and today noticed that account was down about $300. Looked at my transactions and there were 5 charges that weren't from me. Called TD Ameritrade and there was actually a 6th that hadn't posted yet. Total was about $300. 2 were from some cosmetics place, 1 from Bodhaige (apparently another cosmetics place), 1 was a $100 door dash gift card, one was for $23.24 for Red Eye Diner (looks like Charlotte) and one from apple.com. Very frustrating. They are refunding my money but deactivated my card and are sending me a new one. I haven't used that card since late February but I do have it tied to my CAT scale app on my phone. Last Wednesday I went to Canton, Ohio to tow my step-sons new camper back and we stopped at a truck stop over there to weigh the truck and camper. I didn't have to pull my card out but did have to authorize payment from the app. Had to have happened then. I'm more aggravated about my dislike for thieves than I am over the $300.

I hate low life scumbag thieves. Probably sucking welfare off the system too

That sucks. I agree, hate scum suckers that work really hard to not have to work. I had my identity stolen about 6 years ago. They started opening bank and credit accounts in my name. It's not the theft, they didn't get much and I was made whole. But it is the inconvenience. I had to change all my credit cards, close and re-open bank accounts and I had to paper file my taxes using a special PIN from the IRS. It cost me days of my time and hours on the phone to fix. Bastages.

Good that you caught it. They will often take new credit card numbers for a "test-drive" (purchasing a few inexpensive items) To verify its usefulness. They then sell it on the dark webz.

I (used to) travel for work all the time, so I use my Amex card all over the country. Sometimes multiple cities in the same day. Makes it hard for Amex to catch fraud. My card number gets compromised every 2-3 years. Amex is always great about it. I have text message alerts set up for every purchase, so I can identify any unauthorized charges immediately. In many instances, I get the text before I'm even done paying at the cashier.

Yeah I asked the guy about 2 factor authentication. He told me about the alert service so when I get the new card I'll set that up. I hardly ever use that card

+1 on Amex ..... they were awesome when I was traveling like crazy... just call, dispute and they went to work... a few times I think they took the hit instead of fighting for it.... I didn’t think that was right but up to them

We had a similar situation earlier this year. A whole series of faked Paypal withdrawals from a high interest savings account we have. We use that account for nothing other than holding cash. Very few transactions in a year other than monthly interest deposits. That account is not used for any direct payments ever. The were paid to a paypal account directly, but not from our paypal accounts. The theft charges started at a couple bucks and then over about 2 days increased in amounts till the last one was almost $1,000. Total was about 2,300 before we noticed. Royal Bank could not explain to us how the thieves could have hacked into the account. They replaced our debit cards and they contacted paypal on our behalf. Interestingly pay pal reversed the charges. We were never told how that could happen. I suspect it was not a hack through anything we did. I think it was a hack at the bank.

TD Ameritrade said they will replace the money. Even so it still sucks. The charges were $34.00 (some cosmetic place), $36.13 (same cosmetic place), $85.00 (Bodhaige-I guess cosmetics again), $100.00 for a door dash gift card, $23.24 (Red Eye Diner), $20.99 apple.com.

This happened to us years ago and they put a couple of $1.00 apple charges on there to test it out but went right for it this time.

What sucks even more is who is doing a lot of the stealing and hacking. Organized crime and worse, people funding terrorism. These aren't just kids in their Mom's basement.
Sorry this happened to you, but glad you're being made "whole" again.

This credit card crap has happened to me on a couple of occasions but just recently I got the phone call from the owner of my company while on vacation... "Hey did you file for unemployment?"

Uh - no.

Nuts - someone has my SS# most likely from the Equifax breach.
After the Equifax breach, I locked all my credit reports and those of my wife.
Really easy to do and if you apply for something you can make the reports available for a period of time you select.
For what it might be worth, I picked up a subscription for Norton life lock as well.

Favorite credit card story was from vacation in Ft Lauderdale a few years back. Friends had got us an upgraded room at the place we stayed by burning their points. To repay this gift, I picked up the check at the Lobster Bar. That transaction went through on the card just fine. Next morning, We walk across the street to the Speedway for coffee and some munchies and have the card get declined for a transaction that was about 1/100 of dinner the night before.

Once every two year I request new CC and debit cards with new numbers. If I use any of my cards in a third world country I request new ones when I get home. Last year my bank called me and informed me I would receive a credit for 1,300 as my CC had been compromised. It happened to several customers. I have no idea what other information was taken. To date there has been no other charges. The 1,300 never appeared on my card. Banks used to request you tell them when you traveled. If you did not they would stop payments over a set value in different areas. Now they do not request travel information. When we go south we rent a car for 3 months I call my bank and tell them where we are going and where I will probably use my card. In Canada banks will not reverse a charge unless you can prove it was not yours. If you do not pay it when received you are charged CC interest. Dow does it work in the US?

Back around 2007 we were in Aruba and in line for the submarine ride. Started talking to the family in front of us that was from New Jersey. While standing there they got an alert from their bank that their card was just used in California. They said the only time they had used that card was about 30 minutes earlier at a shop right down the road from where we were standing

Yup - this is what we did about 5 years ago after we were robbed and our document safe was stolen. It was later recovered with our documents, less jewelry. :(

Simple to temporary unlock over the phone if you want to change or add credit.

Anytime we travel, we always use our CC and not Bank Cards. Easier to recover credit than cash out of your checking account.

I have separate bank accounts (and obviously CC's) for each of my practices to keep money separated. This happens to me about 4 times a year on one account or another. Luckily all are small banks or credit unions and know me. "Um Dr. Murphy, are you in Tokyo today?" "No, you just called me in Wisconsin..."

Same here. My bank card got hacked last summer, but was immediately caught and denied. Bank didn't think i was trying to pay an Uber driver in the Netherlands. ;)

lol. We only have 1 CC and vowed to never use it unless it is an emergency. I have a phobia of CC's...lol. Don't want them and don't use them.

Heard yesterday that my buddies son (27 yo) got hacked for about $2000 the other day

We locked all our credit reports too. Was pretty easy to unlock when time came for our boat financing.

I'm glad that the CC co's are wising up an putting in better protections. Last week I had a problem paying for fuel at Cape May. Rusty had booked the dockage and the marina put it on his account. When I went to pay for that plus fuel, they entered my CC number but kept Rusty's details. Visa flagged a mismatch between my CC number and the zip code, denying the transaction. It was a little bit of a pain to get that worked out, but I'll take it after having to deal with fraud and cancelled cards.

If its a CC that got hacked, it generally just disappears off the bill and you get the inconvenience of waiting for the new card to show up. If it's a debit card, things get more interesting (read potential painful).

I have a similar allergy, but its to debit cards - I just dont use them.
As long as you can always pay the balance off on CC's - there is money to be made for doing almost nothing.

Agreed on the benefits of using a CC. My daughter uses hers for everything then gets the rewards but way back when I was younger and more foolish I ran up about $10,000 in CC debt and after I paid it off I swore off CC's forever. We have that one just in case we need to rent a hotel room, car, whatever but other than that we don't use it.

And yeah, I rarely use debit cards too. The majority of the time I pay cash or I don't buy it. Not talking major purchases but little things like a drink at the store or wiper blades for my truck, etc. If I know I'm going to be spending it I'll pull it from the ATM and pay cash.
