Hello everyone.

I'm planning a weekend getaway from Haverstraw on the hudson to Freeport Long Island. Anyone have any marina suggestions for Freeport? Clean, neat, services, location to Nautical Mile. Please help.
Also, I'd love any other suggestions in the area too especially jones inlet entrance.

Thanks, Ben

Not sure of a Marina but Braccos seafood is hot and good food. Very popular. Take a walk down wood cleft for a variety of bars and restaurants.

Sorry I cant help on Marinas...my home dock is in Bellmore LI...and I travel to Freeport on a reg basis but never had to stay in freeport

Good luck!!!...you will luv it there!!

Hudson point is one canal over from the nautical mile and they do have transient slips.
there is also a municipal marina at the end of the nautical mile [woodcleft canal].

there is also bluewater yacht club in merrick that does transient slips. Its a few miles away from freeport, but has some amenities.. a pool , restaurant etc.
Enjoy.

thank you Ron

DO NOT USE THE MUNICIPAL DOCK IN FREEPORT. No security, and the current gets crazy. You will not enjoy sleeping there . Ull need a cab ride from any of the other choices. BWYC is a great choice but a 10 mins car ride . FYI they just opened a New restaurant @ BWYC and the food I hear is really good . RAW bar and all. also has a pool like was stated. But u cant walk to anywhere. If u have kids BWYC would be a great choice.

Alex,
Nice docking in freeport. Im glad u did it that way. Buddy and I ended up in the largest end two slips and it was a mess as the current picked up with the tide changes.

I'm in Wantagh Pk and go to the mile a couple of time a year. Check out Guy Lobardo Marina. Its on the other side of the canal. Its a good walk around to the other side. At least two miles from one side to the other. The web site said it has 10 transit slips.

Good Luck

Rob, the moment I knew we made perfect decision instead of rafting in front of the slips is when I saw couple of idiots running on plane through there at night. As far as I know it's a no wake zone. I can only imagine that there would a huge risk of an accident if we placed our raft in there.

I'm two canals over west from nautical mile and out at zaks bay quite often.if your interested on spending one of your days out on the bay let me know maybe get a couple boats to meet up at zacks. If your going to freeport just because of the location and your not meeting anybody there I would highly recommend fire island instead. Much more to do.not to much further

how much further is fire island?

That was my first choice! but i really need to keep the cruising time around 3 and 1/2 hour each way. It takes me 1 hour and a 1/2 to get to the Verrazano bridge and we're only going for 1 night.
The admiral loves being in the center of everything but she also like the boat not to be rocking while we are sleeping.

Help please!!!!

Thanks Alex, it is really helpful and enjoyable to read and follow your stories, especially the one you did 2 years ago " the long island loop- points of interest".
i had a great time reading it!!!

Thanks for the kind words, it gives me more incentive to write the stories.

If you're planning a trip for one night only (btw, it's a quite of a distance for one night, if you can squeeze another night you'll appreciated much more), then I would not make the Freeport as my destination. It's a nice little town where you'll need no more than 2hrs to tour. With only couple of small shops it's mostly night outing place. To keep the distance in shorter range you can do kind of reverse of what we did. Jump in to Jones Inlet and go to the state park by the coast guard station. You'll have free slips and place to hang out on water and kids can play on shore if they like (if you'll have kids with you). Or, go to Zach's Bay, which is about 15min ride eastbound. Then, go to Freeport for dinner and stay overnight. Just keep in mind that in most places in Freeport you'll have no electrical service, which means you'll need to run the genny. Being on a gas boat keep in mind the wind direction if you run the genny in a slip.

I would vote for Fire Island, but it's much further east and maybe a stretch for one night.

for me cruising out of Jones inlet to fire island inlet at about 25mph is about 45 to an hour. Once through fire Island inlet, depending on were you are staying would b no more than a half hour. Freeport is nice but not much to do as Alex says. fire island on the other hand has just about everything from excellent food to bars to all kinds of shopping and lots of people of all age groups freeport at night is a little younger of a crowd. If you get borred in one town on fi you simply hop on a water taxi for 8$ and go werever you want. But even freeport is a long run for one night so I wohld make it 2 :) ..
If you do end up in fi the inlet its a little tricky but very doable just pay attention and if you think your in the channel and your very close to shore you ARE in the right place. In some spots you are within 15 yards of shore. After you get through the inlet again alot of low water but still plenty of deep water just really have to stay inside the markers.

Not sure if this trip was made already - but I concur with everyone else - Freeport is nice but not what I would consider a long-cruise destination. Especially for one night. Run the extra hour and go to fire island. You don't have to go all the way out to watch hill - Ocean Beach has a town marina or 5 minutes east is Flynns in Ocean Bay Park and you can walk or water taxi to ocean beach.
