Just had a sea trial completed and starboard Diesel engine has leaking water pump. Should I deduct a certain amount from the purchase price or should I have the owner fix it. I was thinking along a $2800 deduction and I would foot the bill for what ever was wrong. What would you do?? Thank you in advance for your help.

I replaced mine myself after I bought my boat. I think I got the water pump for about $400 and it took a couple hours to replace it. Being on the starboard side it is harder to get too. However, the much bigger problem turned out to be that it had been leaking a long time and it rusted the motor mount solid, which means you might not be able to align the engine to the driveshaft if need be. That was a much bigger job to replace. It might also be possible that the water pump is leaking into the engine, so I'd make sure that both those things are checked out.

Good luck,

Pete

Also check the intake hoses ,mine were rotted and water was not only leaking into the bilge but they were sucking air into the system.Take a good look at the starter if its downhill from the leak also.

Thanks for the quick response , it's nice to have an active board. The boat has been on shore since November of 2013 (that's what the tag said when it was winterized by Sea Ray) and I was hoping because of that the gasket on the water pump just need to be replaced. Maybe I should have the owner do the fix since it could be worse and not second guess. Thanks again everyone.

You definitely want a Cat guru to do a survey. It's the best $500-$1,000 you'll ever spend, because it's easy to get into the tens of thousands with engine fixes.
