I have a friend that is in need of a water pump for this engine. Can anyone share the best place to order these? I hear that these pumps don't hold up too well and believe it since several people I know with these have had to replace them even though in fresh water for some. Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

Sherwood pumps are crap, they simply don't last at all as you mentioned. Doesn't matter what engine they are on, they for the most part fail very early, 300-400 hrs the bearings start to leak. SBMAR.com , Seaboard marine has made a new pump for my engines (6bta) and not sure they are the same or they have them for the C series but I think they do, check them out. They are worth the change over.

The Seaboard pump mentioned above is the same for the 6CTA. IT's the SMX 1730.
It is direct plug and play for the Sherwood pump, except that the impeller is spline driven rather than key driven, so you would need new spare impellers. (pump was shipped with a spare)
I bought one as a spare because of the poor reputation of the Sherwood on various forums, but both of my sherwood pumps are alive and fine at 10 years and counting.
FWIW, the SMX gets good reviews from those who have replaced their Sherwoods with them.

Thanks guys, passed this information on!

I've got the SeaMax pumps on my C's as well. Excellent performance. Robust construction and better impellers. Fourth season now and the temp gauges are pegged at 160 degrees.

I also run SeaMax. I bought the boat and replaced the shearcrap pumps within 4 months. Funny they are called Shearwood beacuse that is what the shafts do at the keyway.(Shear off)
