Water Park In Lake Michigan

Unbelievable!!!

At this time 53 people have looked at this post and not a single one has a comment.

This site sure is not what it used to be.

Mike, I just got on here and found this. I have mixed feelings about it. I can see it jam packed with a bazillion people from Chicago's East side (Isn't that gang territory????) all fighting for the same areas on that thing and the thing being shot full of holes because none of the gangs would be willing to give up their turf.

It seems like the Great Lakes forums get very little traffic. Had you posted this in the general section I bet people would be all over it?

I saw this news article locally. I suppose I'm indifferent. I imagine it will appear no more or less visually intrusive from the beach than the 200 boats that anchor off the popular beaches around us every Saturday and Sunday to use the Lake Michigan beaches?

Seems to me like this would be better suited to warmer climates either way. Up around us the water temps on the big lake can be quite variable and are generally only tolerable in the peak of summer. Even in August the right wind can push water temps into the 40's. Good luck getting people out on your floating water park on those days!

The comment was not about folks that had not read it but rather the ones who did and were to milquetoast to respond. LOL

Looks like a dumb idea to me. How on Earth are they going to have enough life guards strategically located to help if someone needs it. The weather on the Great Lakes can change in a heartbeat, so the wave action would make short work of it. They need to go find a swimming pool where they belong.

Let them build it. Mother nature will tear it up in short order.

It will never get built. Is been discussed for many years now.

East side isn't to bad, not great either. It's the south and west side that are war zones. That being said, a lot of the riff-raff have infiltrated nicer areas and have negatively impacted what use to be nice events. For example, July 3rd fireworks. Used to be a huge event, but some gang shooting a few years back curtailed that event. Plenty more examples......

I saw the one in Dubai in December. (December is when you want to go to Dubai, water warm, air not hot.) It seemed like it was a big hit with the pre-teen / early teen crowd. You have to swim out to it to get to it and all people were required to wear PFDs. Lifeguards were sprinkled all over it. It looked pretty neat and very active. Can't say how it might fair I the proposed location. Cold water or cool breeze might keep attendance down as you will be wet just getting to it.

The proposed location regularly has swimming bans as a result of "accidental" spills from the nearby factories (this is really more a Gary, Indiana park than it is a Chicago park).

It seems there are much larger roadblocks to this project than the suggested gang violence such as:

-Water temperatures (will whiny kids go into 66-68 degree water (which can happen regularly throughout the summer after a few days of North winds))
-Will parents want their children to play at a "park" knowing if they fall into the water, it's 3 quadrillion gallons as opposed to a 15' deep pool
-The logistics of enforcing openings/closures due to changing weather patterns
-Aforementioned swimming bans due to chemical spills

Unless they're planning to build a breakwater to close off the park and merely use Lake Michigan as a water supply, this seems way too complicated.

This sort of reminds me of the other proposal that's been thrown around for a few years now: http://www.breakwaterchicago.com/

Again, interesting idea, but a few weeks ago we had 16-19' waves. With that kind of movement, I don't think the "floating" approach would work.
