Can anyone recommend a unit or device that has a guage or indicator I can install at the helm to tell me what the water level is in my fresh water tank?

What Dave? You can't move all your stuff in the aft cockpit, open the giant engine hatch, and then pull a few muscles when bending your body to peer at the fresh water tank hidden below the deck (which you can't see clearly anyway if the lighting isn't perfect)? Do you think a bigger boat would resolve some of these little issues?

Hey Dave,
I was always wandering, how is that even in cruisers over 30' there's no water level guage. This is one of the higly used component. So, I made this project last year. I'll check my paper work at home for the company name and prices. But, at the high level, I've used the same parts (the float) as for gas tank and connecting to the guage. I couldn't find an easy way to run the wires from the sender to the main board with all the guages, so I decided to install the guage in the locker right next to the battery switch. It's hidden and yet very easy to get to. Also, you may have a question on how to power it. I figured that I don't want the guage to be on all the time. After all, we only need to see the level occasionally. So, I thought it'll be a good idea to hook it up to the holding tank switch. So, when I turn on the key I see holding tank and water tank levels.

Alex.

DaveS... in doing SmartCraft research, I believe there is an option for SmartCraft to monitor waste and water levels. Not sure if this can be accomplished with your boat setup.

I spoke with the guys at Snake River, their single tank kit with probes and display costs $135.00. Very simple install, you can download the instructions from their site. I think I'm going with this setup.

Does the $135 price cover everything you need for the installation including the sensors?

Dave -

Stratocaster the moderator of Bayliner Owners CLub has some nice pics of everything it takes. Those guys do some cool projects and document them well. It is the Snake River system.

Hope this helps.

Dave,
The only thing not included is some 18ga stranded wire that runs between the tank and display unit. Your local radio Shack stocks that if you haven't already got some. Everything else is included.

Don't use Radio Shack wire - besides paying too much, marine wire should be tinned to resist corrosion. Instead go to www.bestboatwire.com and order what you need there. I got a 100' roll of 16g wire for under 10 bucks, and the shipping was pretty fast.

I agree, there should be a water gauge.

Now that I’m thinking about it, :smt017 the windshield wiper should have a delay setting and be able to put itself down like the windshield wiper on a car.

You forgot about turn signals and back up lights. :smt101

I'm replacing my electric guages with a Tank Tender system. It has one guage and can monitor one, two, four or more tanks depending on the model you purchase. It works off of air pressure and uses no wires, just small plastic hoses. The dealer who sold me my boat told me that many of his customers are replacing their stock guages with TTs because they are so reliable, accurate and do not fail.

I have been trying to remember the name of the system I saw at Rodgers Electronics in Portland, OR. I think you have named it. It worked on air pressure as you say, and seems to be a good way to go.
