I dug into why my tabs are inoperative and found...
actuators work from switch ( old 4 button style)
pump did not run at all
I removed the unit from the boat and bench tested (V351)
red solenoid click
green solenoid click
blue motor barely turns
yellow big spark no motor revolution
but..the reservoir was completely full of clean clear water
when the lines were disconnected there semed to be water in the port fitting and red trans fluid in the starboard
I know the HCU is trashed but is it possible for water to enter a cylinder and travel up the line into the reservoir ???
any recommendations

I had a similar problem in the past, finding water in the trim tab reservoir. It turned out there was a poor seal at one of the trim tab hinges as it attaches to the stern and water was able to get in through the copper pipe at the actuator hinge resulting in a slow admission of some water. The water, initially mixed with the transmission fluid in the system turns the fluid to a milky pink color and if this situation goes undetected the system will eventually fill with water as it appears yours has. I would suggest remounting your port hinge and connections as well as open your port actuator to empty it of all contaminated fluid/water. Also check to see that the seal between the actuator body and hinge has an intact gasket.

moparlvr4406,
Yes if there is a faulty O-ring in an actuator (ram) it is possible to pull water into the system.

The fact that you have a four button switch tells me that it is older, can you tell me how old your boat is?

The pump may be beyond repair, but we can send you new O-rings for the actuators at no charge.

The boat is a 1978 srv240
I have located a couple of used but claimed to be good pumps
But the oring kits would be appreciated
I manually extended the cylinders and the starboard piston looked rusty
Should I consider cylinders too or could the rusty one be cleaned up and resealed ??

Replacing the O-rings is usually all you need to do regardless of how old the actuators are. Send me a private message with your name and address and I well send you them along with instructions on how to replace them, no charge.

Installed a good used pump unit today and cleared the water from the lines and cylinders and the tabs worked for the fist time since I've owned her

Good to hear that!

When you get a chance, put both Trim Tabs in the fully down position and leave them there overnight. They should stay down, if they retract, then there is a leak.

WILL DO
thanks for the help and advise

ran them down 3 days ago and still in the full down position...
I think the repair is a success
thanx Tabman

LOL...
went out to the boat yesterday and noticed the tabs were still in the full down position.
I did raise them after I discovered this
since they have been full down for over 2 weeks can I assume the hydraulic system integrity is good ??

Yup,

The system integrity is good! That's about the best test ever!
