This is a stupid question, and unfortunately I think I know what the answer is, but I will throw it out there.

Merc 260 hp - was running very rough after being achored out. Temp was hot - in the red.

Got it to my slip and it sat for a week. Today I changed the plugs, and when I took the fifth one out, water came out (about a small dixie cup full). It did not happen with any of the other cylinders, and the oil looks just like when it was changed in spring. I have one wire to replace, but I think I have a major problem (cracked head or block?):smt013

Any thoughts before I pull the motor???:smt100

Thanks for any input!!

First thing you might want to do is put you boat and motor info in your signature so that folks might be more willing to help.

After that, you may consider taking out ALL the plugs, turning the engine over to expel all the water then run a compression test before you get all carried away and go to the trouble of pulling the motor.

Next thing most folks say to check are exhaust manifolds, elbows and risers, especially if any of that stuff is more than three or four years old.

Happened twice first time the risers Pulled engine and repaired ( should of re-powered.) Second time cracked head from raw water pump malfunction. Valve job Repair in-place

Agreed! First place I would look is the manifolds and risers. #5 and #3 should sit directly under the riser, if it were to leak slightly I imagine they would be the first 2 cylinders water would go. Fresh water cooled, or Raw? If fresh water cooled, which system? If your manifolds have antifreeze, but risers have water only, it may lead you to riser. It the engine is fresh water cooled a cracked head or block would allow antifreeze into the cylinder, not just water. Fresh water cooled engine would only have water in the heat exchanger and the exhaust system.
