Water Impellers

Does anybody know what impellers a 6cta 8.3 Cummins takes and if anybody has a good source for these. I've requested a parts manual from Cummins twice and still no luck. This will be my first attempt at changing these. Starboard will be easy. Port will be very interesting. Need that 5'10 135lb person for that one. Otherwise I can see a day of cuts, bruises and alot of cussing.

I just finished my impellers. If you want the Cummins part number for the Sherwood pumps in the 6CTA it is 3897337. This is the minor repair kit and includes the impeller, key and two "O" rings. What's not included is the gasket so I went to the Cummins dealer who said it is not available. Just make the gasket out of that Lock-Tite. That's the way it was previously on my motors. Good luck; take Advil first.

Avoiding craps ... wear knee pads from Home Depot, the gel type, I use a 5 gal pail to sit on in the bilge to do much of the work a second to hold the tools I'll need.

Have plenty of light, and bring with you the Boaters Guide to 10,000 cuss words, the abridged edition!

Chad,

Is there an easier way to change that starboard impeller? I wedged myself to the front (aft) of the engine between the cablemaster and worked with a mirror. Do you remove the exhaust?

I used the Jabsco impeller puller, which worked very well, and used a tie wrap on the lubricated impeller to insert. The biggest problem was that I could not see the key and, you guessed it, it was at the bottom. Clinck! I spent an hour freeing up the intake hose and shaking out that escaped key.

The trickiest part is replacing the cover plate which has petroleum gel in the center, Lock-Tite liquid gasket on the periphery, watching that the "O" ring doesn't fall, and all the while trying to line up the bolts precisely while looking through a mirror. (At least I have some practice with a mirror in my vocation).

There's got to be an easier way. Maybe just removing the whole pump? There's no way I could do that starboard motor at sea; the port one perhaps.
