Watch Hill,NY to close next season!

Joe,
My understanding is that the entire marina will be enclosed in some sort of "Thunderdome". Two enter, one leaves....

No mention of the day slips in the article. Metered electric will never work . People aren't going to wait around to check out so the meter can get read. Just shows how clueless the park service is .
IF they don't electricify the days slips it just screams incompetence

Rob
This was asked during a community meeting, and it was a fast NO. Funding was to replace existing electric, not to expand....period.

FOWH caved. Total let down. IDK what happened . Very sad. This is total bs . A project of this magnitude should be all inclusive . NO mention of dredging the marina basin either... FOWH needs to step up their game. I'm sure ill catch **** for this but its part of their purpose. So disappointed

Well, first trip back to Watch Hill since it has reopened and I have to say the upgrade was a major downgrade. Electrical issues with multiple boats up and down the dock. Dockmaster say it has to do with their new state of the art system which is super sensitive. I dont know. We were a group of 7 boats that are always plugged in at our marina and never an issue. Here, half blew the towers and had to be constantly reset or plugged into other towers as they tripped in the middle of the night. Beyond that no more tiki bar. Its now a smoothie bar. I didnt notice any change in water upon entry. Still pretty shallow but didnt have an issue. Also the mosquitios were ridiculous. Normally at this place they were bad for about an hour at dusk then would be gone. Now, they own the place all night! Relentless. You couldnt sit on a chair at night on the dock. If you dont have a camper back of sorts its not worth going here. Speaking of going it seems the locals have shun this place at $3 a foot compared to some other local places. It was literally empty Thursday and Friday. Saturday I would say 80% full. I remember the days where you got turned away cause it was full on Friday mornings. All in all pretty sad. It used to be a great place. The beach is still beautiful but that might be all it has going for itself right now. Hopefully in the future somebody cn figure this place out from a management standpoint and take care of what needs to be changed to make it thrive again. The new guys who run the concession etc seem nice and I hope they make a run at this but right now it was a pretty overall disappointing experience.

The dredging seems fine. I need a little over 4 feet, and have deep water under my boat at low tide. Stay between the markers, stacking the lights has been my approach. Take that final turn into the marina wide, around the red, and your good.

With regard to the electric. They have a pretty sophisticated GFCI system, that is identifying a lot of boat problems that would otherwise go un-noticed.....I agree it is on the edge of "too sensitive" at the 30milli amp leakage......but in that same view, it helps keep things safe. 4th of July weekend, a guy was tripping over 1 amp, and eventually found faulty wiring at the panel. In any other marina, you are talking about a lot of stray current around his boat....don't go swimming!

The new smoothy bar replacing the Tiki bar is a joke. I don't know what they are / were thinking. That place used to be a great stop for a frozen or "T-Rex"

Bugs, well, that will never change. Park service would rather the mosquito over the boaters. And if the wind is down, I'll see you tomorrow. No matter how much i spray up they find me....its a problem!

I'm curious as to what future years bring. The increased rates has the occupancy down for sure, but despite the turnout, I hear that they are making money??...I don't know. I've already been more times the I told myself I'd go (due to the rate increase). Maybe they are on to something.......

Despite the incredibly long walk, the beach is great. Keeps my kids busy for hours. We meet up with a group, and always have a good time, so that is a plus in my book.

Overall, a agree with your view. This place can be over the top awesome with the right management and a few changes.

The one thing I left out that I fully agree with you PMC is the place is still awesome for kids. Mine who are 7 and 9 took full advantage of the place including the ranger station and programs they offered. That was A++.

Hearing in the mosquitos got a lot worse the last two weeks between the heat and rain we've had in August. More or less unbearable. I was there mid July and had no issues but that could have been due to the wind. Anyone go recently that can comment?

I didn't have any electric issues but saw others having problems and even having to move slips. Agree with others that the renovation is a disappointment. They couldn't even sink some new poles and make a few slips wider. They could have also added a playground for kids as well as some other additions that just make sense. Taking away the outside bar blows my mind and actually makes me not want to go. At the same time, being Gov't and State operated, it doesn't surprise me at all that the entire place is and was poorly run/managed and unfortunately, will always be.

Given my friends all live in different towns now, this was one of the few places we could all go together to, but I'd love to find another place. Would be nice for Davis to close up their opening a little so boats don't get rocked so bad or some of the other marinas to let outside residents in

We were there first week of August on C by the restaurant. Mosquitoes were out even in the morning. We used spray non-stop. The evenings were the worst as expected and better after dark.

We had no power issues on C but we did have some friends over on B that did. They said it was a couple of the pedestals since when plugged into another they had zero issues so it was not their boat.

Price to value seems to have diminished this year with the weekends being $3/ft + power. For not much more I could be a Seaview (and probably will this September).

Agreed and appreciate the color. Frustrating

Rumor is Davis is getting a new wall to combat those west/northwest winds. Also with that im sure the price will be going up especially for the locals who pay half the price of out of towners. I love Davis but unfortunately if you cant get there early in the week its becoming tough to get a good spot.

Where did you hear they were getting a breakwall? I haven't heard anything about this but then again, I did not splash this year & may be out of the loop. That would be a home run for that marina!!

It was told to me by friends who are seasonals there and know the people who run the marina. I hope its more than a rumor as it would probably make this place that much better!

What is the cost per foot for Seaview? thought it was like Double WH

Dockwa showed peak season weekday rate of 175 and the shoulder season looks like 125 weekend and 90 weekdays for seaview.

Watch hill was 102 weekend and 68 weekday (plus electric) for the same days for my boat.

Seaview seems to have a pretty limited amount of transient slips. I tried to go there last September and they didn’t have a slip for me. Sailor’s Haven was pretty empty in mid September. Hoping it will be the same this year.
No problem with bugs or electric when we were there last year, not a bad walk to Cherry Grove, and a little shorter water taxi ride to Ocean Beach.
Would be nice to get something closer to Ocean Beach, but seems to be hard to do.

Yes seaview is very limited. I was just making the representation of price v value against the watch hill increase this year.
