Wat its the right temperature for the engine mercruiser 5.7 with alpha one driver ? Wat temp work the thermostat ?

Mid 90's 5.7 and earlier take a 145 thermostat. Some of the newer one's take a 160.

the exhaust manifolds its over heating the engine compartment , the water pump its new and the thermostat mi concern its the thermostat aim not sure Watt its the temp for the thermostat 160 degrees or 140 degrees i install 160 because the old one it was 160 but the Gui's from west Marin tell me this engine carry 160 but for the book cold be 140 degree , cold be the thermostat the problem ????????????????????

20 degree thermostat difference is not gonna cause that much heat at all.

You have a water flow issue somewhere.

1..you impeller/housing in the drive is shot and needs replacing

2..Your manifolds/risers are clogged and not letting water out and need replacing.

3..Your check valves/balls are not holding/sealing in the thermostat housing. They are in the smaller 2 lines on the thermo housing.Springs rods and balls.

Please help me out sea ray members , the mer cruiser 5.7 1996 the temp mark 175 and the oil pressure mark 40 ,, its that correct for this engine ????

thank you , how can i check all this things ?????? To see wat is wrong ????

well, i have tried to follow this thread but got a little confused. it seems like the OP wants to know what the engine temp gauge reading should be under normal operating conditions on his 1996 5.7L mercruiser. i just went through this myself a couple months ago and did considerable research. it seems that prior to 1998 the 5.7L Mercruiser engines with a carburetor had a 142* thermostat installed from the factory. beginning somewhere around 1998 the thermostat was changed to 160* primarily due to the introduction of fuel injection to some of the engines. instead of using different thermostats for fuel injected engines and carb'd engines Mercruuiser just switched all engines to the 160* thermostat. fuel injected engines run more efficiently with the coolant temperature around 180*. carb'd engines as a general rule run better with the coolant temperature around 160*. my boat has a 1998 5.7L engine with a carb and it was running around 185 - 190* which i felt was too high. that is why i started my research into this. i decided to check the thermostat and found it was the original 160* thermostat. i changed it out with a new 142* thermostat. this brought the operating temp back down to around 160 - 165* where it should be, so the 160* thermostat was defective and it was not the optimal rating for my carb'd engine. the operating temperature of the engine will normally be around 10 - 20* higher than the rating of the thermostat. this is because the rating of the thermostat indicates when the thermostat 'starts' to open, not when the thermostat is fully open.

hope this helps.
