I received mine in the mail a couple of weeks ago. I took the BoatUS online course (free)
http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse/default.htm?WT.mc_id=400082
I then printed the certificate and mailed in my $10 check. The license is a one time fee, so that's cool. There were a couple of things I learned on the online course so that was good, but in my opinion there is nothing better than hands on experience.

I followed the same route and am waiting for the card to be mailed. Could have waited a couple years but got it out of the way. I agree about hands on experience and feel the knowledge gained via the online course is limited, but better than nothing.

I took the USCGA Boating Safety classroom course with my Admiral 2 years ago. We both passed and both got our cards. I would have been grandfathered in but took the course anyways. That was the third time I'd taken the course. I just took it again for the fourth time. Never hurts to have a refresher.

My wife and I got ours in 08. I'm trying to get my son to get his so he can drive the boat when I'm not around! HA!! Like that would EVER happen!! It's a good excuse to get him motivated though! I told him he needed it to drive the dinghy! Don't tell him he doesn't! We only have a 3.5 hp motor on the back!!

When we bought our boat, every single one of us (including the two teenage girls) did a little studying then took the test. We all have our cards. I let the girls drive from time to time - when they are not texting....:)

Yeah I think it's a good idea to have the older kids get their's too. As soon as my twins are old enough we'll have them get their's.

Wife and I got ours last year. The teenage girl will get hers soon. Can you be pulled over for texting or talking on the cell phone while operating your boat?

A few years ago I took a Power Squadron class and was able to use that for the state boater's card. If most people knew who was the stand on boat and who was the give way boat, things would be a lot better.

Great info Todd - I'm getting mine now.

We got ours 3 1/2 years ago when we upgraded vessels, but I couldn't let us be equals so I got my 50 Ton Masters License from the USCG last year.... So she has to listen to me right ?????????? Ya, that's what I thought... Not !!!

How did you go about getting your license locally?
