Hi Folks,
I just bought a 98 Carver 35' ACMY and am in the mist of doing some much needed upgrades. I've added a freshwater flush, additional fuel filters for both the engines and genset and an oil change system. The pocket book is taking a hit, but I'm almost there. I haven't even taken the boat out yet!!

I want to add a digital voltmeter because the OEM on the helm is difficult to get an accurate reading. I have 3 battery banks, 2 AGM batteries on battery selector position #1, two AGM's on battery selector position 2, and a single AGM solely to start the genset.
All the batteries are new and recharged by a Charles 5000 series batt charger. I think I need to have the charger modified for the AGM batteries, but not sure as I haven't been able to find the serial number on the charger.

Hears my question: If I install a voltmeter, I think I will need to install isolators on the battery banks with two batteries, otherwise the voltmeter would just read bank voltage, not individual battery voltage. Correct?? If so how is it best to do this? Is the isolator installed electrically between the two batteries on a bank. If so how would you parallel them when necessary?

2nd Question: I live in the Tampa bay area, but presently have the boat in the Port Charlotte, FL area. Will use it for the summer in the Port Charlotte/ Ft Myers area and bring it home once it cools a bit. I want to re-carpet the interior and would like to get some recommendations either in the Tampa area or Port Charlotte area. Any suggestions?

Tim

Do you realize YES ALL OF YOU READING THIS!!! WE ARE SICK!!! LOL

Can't these wonderful boats we own just be good enough? But No!!! we have to tinker, replace improve, spend spend spend.

Perfect example is poor Tim here, he owning a 1998 boat obviously owns a decreped, old, run down anchor. With a 12 years behind her she might as well be a rock with some reeds tied to her sides to float!

LOL please see the humor co-sicko's

Tim check this link out for your battery volt meter http://genki.home.ionet.net/BattMon/BattMonArticle.html

Seriously, some sound advice. Please do not take safety (ie fusing) lightly. With a back ground in the electrical field and building race cars, design early and quick (closest point of attachment to the system and fast blow) current seperation in the metering. And make sure the wiring is loomed tightly, minus damage to the insulation tighter the better and consider vibration on the connection joints.

With the racng stuff, wire wears on DC, wire melts, starts fire, you have to pull over and hope your 100g toy doesnt burn up while safety crews arrive.

Your Boat wiring burns and... well your FUBAR'd

All that said what you wish to do is fairly simple just dont be lazy on the details.

Regards,
Joey
