I pulled the cover off for the first time since march and found the Vinyl seating looked like someone had thrown a can of reddish brown paint across all the seating.

I have suspected it was the reddish dust that blows around lake Powell. Some how it migrated into the vinyl in a very distinct pattern and badly stained it. I tried soap, Oxi Clean, Attwood vinyl Cleaner and finally I took a sanding dish and hand scrubbed with the disk, it loosened some of the material but left a pink stain.

Any idea what could have happened?
Do you think this is an insurance claim?

Here what remained after my best effort cleaning.

Spray Nine. Spray it on, let it sit for a minute, then use a stiff brush (NOT a wire brush - nylon) on it. Make sure that the areas with the stains get some sun to help bleach it out. If the stain is still visible, just keep using the Spray Nine for a few days. Spray it on, wipe it around so that the stained area is damp and let it air dry.

I have had patches of that color on my white seats in the spring as well. There is no Lake Powell dust out here. I believe that the red stuff is a form of mold or mildew. Bleach or Spray Nine in combination with the sun will make your seats white again.

Now I have to ask... Sandpaper? Really? What grit? Why?

I had to laugh, doesn't everyone use sand paper on vinyl? I orginally drove the 7 hours this wknd to finish sanding the hull and apply wax from my bottom paint removal project. In the middle of the desert options are limited to what you bring with you. Scrubbing with a nylon brush and the above cleaners would not touch it. I figured the seats were destroyed and I had nothing to loose. The nearest store is some 3 hours away so I'll try the Spray 9 on the next trip.

I agree with the mildew comment. There is a pinkish mildew that I've seen on vinyl before and it is very difficult to remove. I've never seen a cleaning product that would remove it.

Try Magic Eraser. It is an abrasive, and after several uses will remove the vinyl finish. Search the site, you will see the controversy. I've used it in the past when all other cleaners have failed. The results are very surprising.

STOP!!!

It isn't mildew (mildew out here is very rare). It is heat. The spots where it happened are where the mooring cover touches the vinyl, right? Put a white terry cloth towel between the seat and the cover and that does not happen. The good news is the sun will take most or all of that stain away.

I don't know if your other attempts damaged the vinyl or not. If so, I know a great uphoslstery guy in Phoenix (the best one I've known in 20 years).

bingo keokie; had the same thing happen to our boat at mead this spring and after a couple of days in the open it was gone.

it was back this weekend. the towel things sounds like a good fix.

look us up if your down, don. we are on f dock at the end.

by the by; did you notice the sagebrush in bloom?
have lived on the high planes all my life and have only seen it bloom few times, and never as pretty as between hanksvil and B F now.

Powell is greener than I have ever seen it. Everything was in bloom, the area looked completely different.

Keokie, my cover is not touching the vinyl, can you explain what you mean.

I have to agree with the magic eraser. I have never used it but my buddy does all the time on his 2003 280 DA and his vinyl looks great! Todd

Spray some rust remover and let it sit on it for a few minutes and see if it dissapears.

The rust remover is like CLR but it works much better. It is for removing well water stains off all kinds of surfaces.I've never had it hurt a thing.Lowes/Homo Depot etc.

Don SR, hmmm.... I don't know. Did you have anything on the seat at all? By the picture, it looks like what we see out here when a cover or canvas or something rests on a vinyl seat in the sun or very high heat.

X14 will remove that . Let it sit on the stains for 5-10 minutes then rinse.
Keep repeating till gone.

It will work and be sure to dress the vinyl afterwards
