Video of Boat Cruise into Annapolis, MD

why is it called ego alley?

It's called "Ego Alley" because it's a very narrow harbor /waterway (not sure what to call it) that most boaters don't have a need to go in. Yet, they go down and do a lap to be seen and see what's going on. You can't sit your boat at the end because other boaters come in and need room to turn around. It can get crazy busy in there. I've seen a 70'+ Sunseeker go down there and turn around. Lucky there wasn't much docked at the end. You can side dock if you get a slip from the city dockmaster.

after rewatching the video i see what you mean. i would hesitate to go down there on a busy day

Tom, not sure if the GoPro has a built in stabilizer, Im sure it does. You should have a great weekend for boating.
Downtown Annapolis has many places to stay, I will break it down;
-Ego Alley (1) the wall or (2) slips. Both are first come first served. You can make reservations on the wall opposite side of the Harbor Master's office. Its a dollar more per foot. The slips are a little more quiet compared to the wall, you get lots of people talking to you and the night life can get a little crazy depending on the occasion. If you want excitement this is your best bet.
-Mooring balls in harbor. They are great when its not choppy, it can get rocky depending on winds.
-Mooring balls in the back of Spa Creek. Very quiet and always calm. This is where we stayed last weekend when shooting this video.
-Annapolis Yacht Basin. The marina is right there but just like the harbor it can get rough.

The Annapolis water taxi is great, they will pick you up at your boat if cruising without a tender.

Just to add to Jon's comments... You can also stay in Back Creek which is just before annapolis harbor on the eastport side. There is an electric cart / shuttle that runs people over to downtown (5 min cart / 10 minute walk) for free/pay what you feel is appropriate. Since you have kids, Mears Annapolis has a nice pool (with bar along side) and tennis courts. Its calm and more quiet in back creek. Annapolis landing marina is also nice, but you cant walk to town from there.

I dropped the ball on organizing a Middle Bay event because of job / contract change issues, but maybe there is still time. Hope to see you both on the water this season regardless. This weekend will be the first of the season on the hook.

Jon, what is your height above the water? You didn't need an opening for the Eastport Bridge?

Was it low tide?

I think I'm around 14-15 ft? Not sure exactly but that's why I entered with caution. I saw another 48DA do it, of course I had to lower the antenna.

Thanks Jon and Jim! Great info for Annapolis we have never been there by boat been there many times by land. Really want to anchor out this year with so many seasons down we have never anchored out. I know I hear you saying what! Hopefully this year. Gotta do it soon before it heats up. The Fam likes sleeping in comfort. Jim no need to feel you dropped anything! Great job last year it so tough to get a good weekend. Some times last minute is the best. No spreadsheets needed!

Jon - Loved your video. Looks like there was another nice 48 Sundancer sitting in Ego Alley !! It was great meeting you and your family that weekend. Hope to see you again soon. Dave & Cindy

Dave,
It was great meeting you and Cindy. I will be on Ego Alley this weekend if you are around. And yes there was another nice 48 Sundancer on the Alley.

Jon

Sorry we missed you. We were headed to Ego Alley when we passed you yesterday. Gorgeous weekend, wasn't it?

I figured that was you when I saw the white hull 48DA heading towards me. The weather was fantastic, Ego Alley was pretty quiet compared to other Memorial Day weekends. The reservation side and the wall side had openings all weekend. Anyhow we had a blast. I am always amazed by the questions people ask while we were tied up to the wall.
