I have several Port O Call episodes on our DVR. I miss that show, but that is another story.

I want to archive them off of the DVR. I image I can just use a normal capture device connected to a laptop and run them off there in real time.

Anyone done something like this and want to suggest some reasonable units?

Thanks!!!

PS.. What ever happend to this show. I know if was just a 30 minute advert for MarineMax, Russo Marine, and Sea Ray... But I loved it. I watched them all yesterday to get over my winter blues... Anyone on the board here "star" in one???

Take Care all!!!

They stopped recording the show about two years ago......I loved the show too.....Need a market though!!!

Yes I do understand why it stopped for sure. Maybe some day it shall return. Henry its a standard Comcast DVR. But I look around and google to see if TCP/IP is an option. That would be so much quicker... Thanks!!

Try calling Comcast to see if they can help you. Good luck with that!

Cable Co boxes are required to have a 1394 (firewire) output. You can stream the shows digitally so no loss of quality. If you have a Mac it will be extremely simple. Its still possible on a PC, just a little more complicated. A google search with the model # of your DVR, and the terms firewire & video, should get you headed in the right direction.

I spent about a day trying to do this via the Ethernet port on the Comcast DVR. there is a windows driver out there that _sort_ of works, but is very buggy. I gave up trying to get it straight into the computer.

I found the best thing (that I have been able to do) is to plug in your digital camera (or computer capture card) in the SVHS port and capture that way. Then you can do the normal Cam-computer capture.

A comcast tech was over the other day and I asked him about this. He went to some deep menu and showed how the ethernet ports were disabled. Probably an anti piracy thing.

Try the SVHS route, its easy, but not HD.

Exactly!

Download Apple's Firewire SDK, you have to register as a developer, but it's no cost, no obligation. Install the SDK and using the Virtual VHS application, you can record from the Firewire (IEEE 1394) port directly to your Mac in full NTSC or HD quality. This works for DVR playback and for watching live TV. Unfortunately, Comcast disables the Firewire 1394 port when watching On-Demand movies. I'm not sure that's legal, but I've not had the time to research it. I've tested this extensively with Comcast's Motorola dual HD tuner DVR model DCT6412.

Best regards,
Frank
