We purchased a handheld VHF, Icom M34. I am getting it setup, but I was hoping you guys could help me a little. It is monitoring channel 16 and the weather channel, but what other channels should I tag it to monitor? Any other setup tips as well?

16 Is about the only one that gets much use on our lake. It is interesting to listen to during events.

Edit- Sometimes you will hear fisherman on the other channels.

Are you on a lake or saltwater? If saltwater I would invest in a fixed mounted VHF for range and safety(actually I'd do it either way). In my opinion handhelds are great for dinghies within close range to the mothership or within marinas. The reason is the range of a handheld is weak. Especially with any land masses around.

16 is what you'll be monitoring and only if you and a buddy agree on a working channel for chit chat (ie. 68, 69, etc) to monitor as well.

We are on a lake. Talking to the local manager at West Marine and our marina, they recommended the handheld, as we have great cell service all over the lake.
