Vhf hand held radios

To add to Gary's list, I recommend you register a separate MMSI # from the main boat for the Handheld that is DSC capable. This way they'll have the information on your Dink instead of looking for your mother ship.
The SH850 is a nice little radio. I'm considering it myself, but I don't have a true dink yet so it's not a priority. I have a friend that has one and it's a nice little unit.

I just picked up an ICOM IC-M34. While testing it I've noticed some strange operation. If I adjust SQL to have at least 1 bar I loose the broadcast. When I adjust it to OP (completelly open) level I hear heavy noise and monitor shows "busy", this is hapenning on all chanels. Is this normal for handhelds to have such a heavy noise? If I switch it to weather broadcast it's not bad, b/c I get constant announcments. But, when I switch to regular chanels I only hear the noise. I'm a distnace away from water, so I'll give it more testing when I'll have a chance to be near water or CG station. The strange part is why would I see "busy" indicator on and noise while there's nothing broadcasting.
