Posting for a friend that has a Sabre 432 SE powered by Cummins Zeus pods. I thought the folks here might have some insight. His question below:

Vesselview7 Missing Pod Angle icon indicator.
When we sea trialed our' 17 42 SE last October the icon was there. Boat was winterized and hauled a month later. After launch, I noticed there was no icon at the top of Vessel view7 Engine screen. The 45degree to 45 degree tick marks are there, but no icon. Mercury manual says the tick marks and icon are defaulted "off" and needs to be turned on in Settings. The settings page on my VV7 does not have the same page to turn this on or off. Any idea what happened? And how to restore?

I am thinking my issue might be cleared with a reset. I downloaded a VV7 manual and there are a couple of ways to reset, I think. One way is to use the Setup wizard to auto find all the sensors with ignition switch to on. I am thinking my problem is the processor cannot talk to the pod angle sensor in my case. The other way is to go to preferences and turn steering indicator on. Not sure if my model VV7 has this menu. I am nervous about trying Wizard setup for fear of messing something up. It seems there is a way to save current settings on a micro SD card. If true, I might try using the Setup, wizard.

Did a sensor or sensor connector get disturbed during winterization?
If the VV7 is picking up the other sensors I would doubt it's an issue with the VV7 or wiring to it.

Brad,

My background with Zeus is limited, but I do know that with IPS there are two rudder angle "calibrations", one to set up the display, the other to physically zero the pods parallel to the longitudinal centerline of the boat. It sounds like you are looking to do the former. Doing the latter improperly would definitely ruin everyone's day.

Have you, or your friend, logged on to on the Sabre and Back Cove Tech Group on FB?posted the question there? The guy that moderates it is a pod whisperer and probably the best place to start. Following that is Tucker Thompson at Sabre. He may not help with the specific question, but will put you in touch with either someone in the Sabre organization, or an expert at Merc. He hooked me up with technical guys at Volvo.

Brad,

The source of the rudder/pod angle has to be in whatever black box (and it's software) that is controlling the pods. It's a fundamental requirement of the system that it knows where the pods are pointed at any given time under way, especially when in joystick mode as rudder angle becomes meaningless. So if the boat drives correctly in both modes, the issue may not be in generating the rudder/pod direction data, but getting it to the display.

Thanks Henry. Joe already posted in the Sabre tech group a few days ago and got crickets. I volunteered to ask the good crew here for him.

I have the same issue on my vv7. I have the 45---45 tick marks but no indicator. I'll check this weekend if i have it on my menu as well as checking w my cummins guy.
Will report back here.

Got a message back from my friend:

Got call back from Cummins support. They said they have seen this on VV4 and VV7. They recommended a factory reset. Oh boy! I will go through the copy profile steps first.

By the way, he was amazed at the activity on CSR.

Brad, there is only 1 line for the steering indicator. Does he expect to see 2?
Mercury told me that assuming it was working correctly, it will only ever show the direction of 1 pod.
you could select which one in the settings menu under steering supposedly
PCM0 for starboard or PCM1 for port

My vv7 steering indicator was set to "TVM" have no idea what that means(Thanks Very Much??), but there was no indicator.
Changed it to PCM0 and now i have 1 indicator that does indeed work. Better than nothing!

TVM is thrust vector module...it’s Mercuruiser’s term for the CPU mounted on the Bravo3 steering actuator that controls sterndrive steering movement.

Thanks Stephen, appreciated the info.
Hope all going as well as can be expected with your claim. I noticed you haven't posted on that topic recently.

Thanks for asking...had to file claim with my insurance as the other party’s max policy limit would easily be exceeded. They promptly sent out an independent marine claims specialist to generate a report/repair quote. We are currently awaiting that report.

Hopefully hear something in the next day or so...

Hoping this gets resolved quickly and painlessly for you
