valve repair costs on a 350

I have had to have a cracked valve replaced /repaired on my inboard 350 mercruiser, and wonder if anyone has had similar, and what the final cost was...?

These motors, 350 inboards, only have 40hrs and I wonder what the cause of the valve failure was...

Im really just looking for guesses / speculation for interest sake as the job is already underway.

If you do the work yourself, just the machine work and replacement of the valve is around like $300. I'm also fixing a messed up valve on a 350 motor. The retainer broke and the valve ended up nicking the piston. The engine builder/machinist i took my heads to says this happens when the motor over rev's. I cannot be 100% certain but it does sound like a some what understandable reason.
