I have a beautiful 1990 390 E.C. I am restoring...I would like some advise , recommendations on replacing the mattress in the V-Birth...Any folks done this with a high quality product...? Sealy, Tempur-Pedic.....? Thanks Contrails

If the upholstery is still in good shape, I would just find a local upholstery supply and purchase new foam. They usually sell in large sheets 4x8 or 5x10. There are also different densities so you can decide how firm or soft you want it to be. You can use your old foam as a pattern. Our v-berth had wore out and this is what we did. Don't be shocked when you hear the price. Foam is very expensive. Do shop around and even check prices on the internet.

Replaced the original Sea Ray mattress in my 1986 390 Express last winter. Bought double size 8" memory foam mattress from Walmart for $240. Removed old mattress, carried box onto boat, opened box and laid new mattress on bed, waited 48 hours for it expand fully, put old mattress on top of new to use as template, trimmed old mattress with fillet knife to fit. Result, more comfortable than my $1200 Sterns & Foster I have on bed at home. It's crazy to spend big $$$ for a custom boat mattress.

I did the exact same thing on my 85 390 EC except I ordered one from Overstock and used an electric carving knife to do the trimming. It worked great and it sleeps wonderfully all for a couple of hundred dollars.

I did the same thing on my 280DA. Bought 3 1/2 inch memory foam from Wally World, laid V-birth cusions on it and cut with an electric knife. The wife made custom sheets and a comforter. It's 100 times better than what it was.

Every night we stay on our 280, we give praise to the previous owner that purchased our custom mattress! Best sleep I get!

For those of you with the foam mattresses... did you replace the bow cushions that were there originally, or did you put the memory foam on top of the originals?

In my case out with old in with the new 8" memory foam. Believe that's what most do.

we tossed the original and bought an 9" memory foam from SAMS for under $300. trimmed with electric knife. I like it better than our Tempurpedic at home which cost about the same as a small car.

I use Fox Mattress in Daytona Beach for our custom made mattresses for our coaches and my 280

Your boat is sick!

Thanks for the memory foam ideas. My 268 is getting updated!!

Thanks...*sick* is a good thing, right? Btw, had same 268 (color, year) a few years back. That's a big dog on a trailer.

Yes, sick is good (at least I hope so). I don't generally use these new "hip hop" type terms, but it seemed fitting when I saw your boat. It was meant in the good context.

The 268 is a great stepping stone for us. We put about 3000 miles on the truck/trailer every year. Good electric brakes and a big motor in the truck are a necessity. Not to mention heavy duty rear springs. The trailer really should be tri-axle..

We added a 4" memory foam topper from Costco to the 340. Just moved it to the 410 this weekend - was surprised that I had to trim it again - the 410 forward mattress is about 4" narrower than the 340's. Use an electric knife for the trimming.

We got rid of our memory foam this year and went with Handcrafted matteress co best money I ever spent I'm a big guy and the memory foam did not cut it for me.

You might consider this system under your current mattress www.frolisleepsystems.com , we installed it four years ago and have been completly happy. One main feature is that it allows air movement under the mattress.

Which company did you use?
