Has anyone done more than add a couple of inches of memory foam to the factory mattress?

We have done the above but would like something better. I took the factory mattress (4" of dense foam) to a local mattress manufacture, he proposes adding 2" of less dense foam & topping with a 2" pillow top, all enclosed in a typical mattress cover.

Can your local guy just make a new innerspring mattress for you? Adding to the original will certainly help but when its over and done with, the extra cost for a whole new innerspring one may not be much more and would by far be better than any amount of foam. Worth checking into I'd imagine. SB

We just finished doing all of the work to modify this stuff. We bought 3" heavy (4#) memory foam from Overstock dot com. We bought the Calif King, and it was barely big enough. I had to cut off two corners and glue them to one side to make it wide enough. The 3" memory foam on top of the original padding is PLENTY. We thought about 4", but if anything, the 2" or 3" seems best to us.

We made a mattress cover from older sheets and sewed it permanently around the memory foam. Then, we cut and sewed a mattress pad to cover that. We custom cut/sewed a bottom sheet and sewed a top sheet to that. The goal is to make everything fit and hold well. My wife bought a bed spread set and cut and sewed it to match the outline on top, and around the aft (exposed) portion of the mattess combination. The rest lays flush on top, but under the surrounding bolster.

Look closely for Glued Seams (Superbonder 355 Multi-Purpose Spray Glue).

After redoing the interior of our '39 Luscombe 8A back in the 70s, my wife refuses to do any upholstery work. Come on, that was 30+ yrs ago. Let her find a cute grandbaby pattern, she's all over it.

The big question Hampton...how does it lay, lie, sleep?

Most excellent. I would have thought that 4" would have been better, but not now. 3" on top of the original is just like heaven. Of course, that depends on your bed at home. If your have a firm one at home, but the boat is too firm, go with 2". If you have a moderate one at home, go with 3". If you like to sink like the Titanic, go with 4".

Left the mattress with shop #1 today, scheduled to pickup in 10 days, means one weekend at the lake with no mattress, will have to bunk in salon, have done it before when kids & grandkids took forward berth...woke up stiff as a board...arrrr

Custom Yacht Decor in FL wanted $2 ~ $2.6K for innerspring mattress, shop #1 is doing above mod for $6C. Got a 2nd bid from shop #2, was basically the same, finish fabric was not as nice, more institutional, shop #1 wins.

Hampton, your comfort description is music to my ears. Going with overall height of 8" with added foam going vertical instead of following slope of hull.

Off to MID at 5am Fri, 320 miles, won't see 100 cars enroute, maybe a couple of fighters down low scaring the goats. Got a show, will return Mon ~ 1am. Yous guys on the E coast good luck with whatever her name is.

Congrats on the decision! I'm sure you'll be happy - and well rested.

Mattress was supposed to be back in SAT from factory in CRP yesterday. I called SAT, they said due to Ike CRP shut down production last Thur & Fri & it will be in SAT next Tue. Yea, right...bet some fat a$$ is sleeping on my mattress...better not smell when I get it next week.

EEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwww. I'm sure it'll be fine - after some Fabreeze.

on this old boat, the foriginal foam mattress (around 5" thick) is sagging/drooping where bodies lay. with no bedding, it sort of looks like two invisible people sleeping on it. i had thought about a memory foam topper and had actually checked on overstock.com. my bed measures 101" a it's widest and 87" at it's deepest. do you guys think the memory foam will work to fill in the sags or will it only make it worse b/c of it's ability to sag. i am a stomach sleeper and saggy soft crap is killer on my back.

I'd like to get the memory foam 4" topper and cut it to fit our V-Berth Cushions, un-zip them and replace the factory foam. We have a memory foam 10" at home and man, I love that thing. We currently lay out a sleeping bag over the v-berth now to protect the fabric and have a nice soft material to sleep on. Then we have a nice down comforter as our "blanket". That also makes it's feel "just like Home"

My back is being distroyed by our v-berth. This is one of my projects also. I've never used the memory foam so I don't know what to expect. I think I'll buy a large enough pc sleep on it at home and then decide wether it'll be an addition to or replacement for the current SR foam.

No, I don't think it will work for that. Maybe you can get a 4" piece and replace the old foam in your current bedding, and then, consider a topper to make it like heaven on earth.

Rondds, I agree that a new foam topper will not fill in the valleys. Get a new one entirely.

On our 250 the mattress was basically sound, but hard, so we got a memory foam topper and after initially liking it, we decided we don't like memory foam. It is too 'dead' feeling. Instead, we went with Talalay latex. We enjoy that much better, and even switched our bedroom mattress to one with Talalay.

Finally received our modified mattress & have spend two nights enjoying it. While it's not as soft as we though it would be it is very comfortable & we awoke without any stiffness as before. The manufacturer's contract states they'll do whatever it takes to please us so we'll evaluate it for the winter before making any adjustments. One concern we have making it too soft is getting in & out over the foot. Currently we can manuver well & fear a softer mattress might present some navigational problems.

In review, 3" of a softer foam was laminated to SR's orginal 4" of very dense foam & all was enclosed all in a top of the line pillow top enclosure. The finished product is as nice a mattress as I've seen in upscale hotels & resorts & it fits perfectly in the berth area.

Bon Dia...that looks very nice. Did you remove the fabric covering from the Sea Ray mattress? So they just added foam to the top of your other mattress and put on a quilted pillow top?

They removed the SR foam from the factory cover & glued it to their softer foam along the edges only so if they needed to separate the two later it would be a simple knife cut rather than an entire skinning.

Side note..we got cold both nights & had to up the thermostat a couple of degrees above our nornal setting. The salesman said the pillow top allows body heat to dissipate while foam retains it; not sure if true but we never felt overly warm nor muggy under the covers, always very comfortable.

We added a 4" memory foam pad from Overstock.com to our 330....very comfortable.
