Hopefully going to pick up a used Westerbeke 5.0 BCG tomorrow. Price is too good to pass up... So with that, anything in particular that I should be looking for? It's out of the boat and not able to be started. I'm expecting to have to rebuild it, but it looks pretty good physically in the pics. I know engines so I'll smell the oil, look for any signs of a cracked block etc.

Can't crank it up? How do you know it will produce power? Man, I'ld be looking for a way to get fuel and water to that puppy before I handed over the bucks

Honestly I'm assuming it will need work. It seems to be a case of they just want to get rid of it because they don't use it.

I’d run it if at all possible. Check spark and compression. At least ohm out the back end to make sure the windings are ok. The rotor and stator are the $ parts

do you have access to a megohmeter and a wiring diagram?

There are a few youtube videos on running marine generators outside the boat.

I think it's pretty straight forward.

Give it a run and check it out before installation. Could make that a purchase condition.

It’s hard to give you appropriate advise without all the facts. What price is “to good to pass up”? The engine is only part of the issue. You can easily spend another $1000 plus if the back end is junk. Looks don’t matter on the back end. You need to spin it.

Thanks guys. It was $600. I'm rebuilding it. I started another thread about the rebuild.
